Stress at school

How does everyone release stress at school?

A few people in my very small class think it is inappropriate for some of us to use humor to get through....

For Example the other day we were shown a video of someone obviosly having a CVA /TIA episode....when the teacher asked what specific assessment would we perform... someone laughed and said "oh I don't know maybe gastrointestinial..." everyone laughed ..... This is part of a CPE so it is a pretty serious thing but to let out the tension this student was great....

Well one of my fellow classmates felt that we as a group are not serious about school and should be respectful of those that are serious....

I was pretty hot and even had to leave the class a moment to compose myself... I mean WTF... it was a joke and a well timed joke at that.... you know how tedious some things are and how they are continually drilled into us...... it was a stress release...

What does anyone think?

perhaps a lower GI exam, make sure she's not sitting on something?

You've got the right idea - humor is ABSOLUTELY essential!

I think that the days in which I have truly laughed are the best days of my life. I'm set to graduate in June (PLEASE God!!) and I crack jokes and laugh all the time. While watching an epilepsy video I remember quipping "Hey, I saw a guy doing that at a dance club!!" Laughter relieves stress and increases comfort. Since it was a classroom, not a patient's room, I feel that the humor was reasonable. People deal with their stressors in different ways. I crack jokes... sometimes because it's all that keeps me from screaming or crying. If that makes me unstable, so be it. I like to believe that it makes me adaptive. Besides, it beats the heck out of a headache from screaming or a runny nose from crying. :p

You have to laugh and have sense of humour to get through school and your career!!!

Ok, I'll play the devil's advocate. It is good to utilize humor, just remember there is a time and place for everything and moderation is a key. I have a classmate who is CONSTANTLY making such comments in lecture. It does get old when you are thrying to assimilate a great deal of information in a short amount of time and you have one who needs to be the center of attention. I have assured that i will not be in class with this person next quarter for this very reason.

Once again IMHO, humor is great, just don't become a smart***.

Absolutely couldn't agree more!

If it's a once in a while thing it's definitely a stress release and probably pretty funny. If it's going on every 10 minutes it's a pain in the a$$ and very annoying for those students who really are taking what they're learning seriously. Every joke takes time out of lecture and requires everyone to refocus again... I love 'em don't get me wrong, but if they're constant they're no longer funny.

So is this a constant thing in your class?

Humor is definitely necessary. One of my best and favorite laughs occured this semester. The class know-it-all asked the professor if we would be "punished" for not doing our paperwork exactly right. My friend and I looked at each other and asked, "Did she just say 'punished'?" and proceeded to fall out of our chairs laughing.

Thanks everyone I think I have the answer I was looking for.... No the outbursts of humor are not constant, but perfectly timed to break the stress.... I am so glad that most everyone sees it for what it is worth... Humor is a very important part of eceryday life.... more necissary in nursing classes sometimes. Thanks
