I start my first semester of a BSN program the beginning of Feb. I was doing fine - excited, ordered all my textbooks, had orientation ect, and then today I started to freak out. I was at work talking to one of our surgery fellows, an MD, and he was saying how poop and phlegm gross him out the most - I said "eeewww gross, me too!" And he said "well get used to it!" And for some reason in that one little moment it all hit me. I suddenly realized what I have gotten myself into! Is this normal? What if I just can't handle the gross stuff after all!? Is there going to be more to nursing than bathing people and cleaning up poop!? I'm freaking out right now!!!!

Yes, Virginia. There are plenty of professional nursing activities beyond the poop, the snot, and the hockers. :uhoh21:

Well, I am in the same program as you, so maybe I can predict a little. There will be a good dose of poop in the first term LTC clinicals, and smaller doses in the clinicals after that, but not too much. There is much more to being a nursing student than poop or phlegm cleanup fortunately. I haven't had to deal with that much phlegm actually. Maybe I've been hitting it lucky!

I can tell you poop and puke isn't the worst part! There is soooooo much information to learn.. it's stressful.

That's probably pretty normal. A lot of us have "the moment".
Mine was when I bought books and brought them home. The stack of books reached my waist, and one was a huge med-surg book. I thought "what the heck am I doing???????????"
Good luck.

Hey Tweety, It's good to know that is a normal feeling (the complete lost feeling when you bring home $800 worth of books that you can't even carry up to your apartment let alone pilfer through in one semester). I just had that feeling the other day before I started school (first semester ADN). YIKES!
