Recording Lectures

  1. Hi all! I am going to start my prereqs at Ivy Tech in the spring, and I am wanting to record the lectures.

Do any of your professors not allow recording (either in a nursing program or outside of it)?

I am looking around for good voice recorders and I was just wanting recommendations on any if you are using one. I would feel more comfortable spending money on it if I knew someone who has had a good experience with the one I would be buying. Lol

The cheaper the better but less then $100 would be great. I would just use my phone but it runs out of battery so quickly. I don't think I would get a good recording with it anyways.

I want one where I don't have to keep it out and I can just set it in my purse and forget about it. I don't know if that's possible to get a good recording that way, but figured I'd try.

    Thanks!

First off, before you get too far, check with your school if they PERMIT recording of classes. NOT ALL DO! So that's your first step.

Then it may be an instructor's perogative to be recorded. Again, not all instructors like being recorded.

^ Exactly. One of the programs in my areas forbids all recording. Mine is up to the professor, and some allow it while others don't.

I personally just use my laptop to record while I'm taking notes. You get some typing sounds in the background, but it's cheaper and easy.

I def will ask before recording. That's a good idea about the laptop but I think I may need to buy a new battery. My runs out when I don't have it plugged in. Lol I'm not sure I would feel comfortable taking my laptop anyways. It's a gaming laptop (lol) and it's heavy. That's why I wanted something to just stick in my purse and forget.

Ah. My program requires you have and bring your laptop for several of the courses, so I always just assume other people are planning to bring theirs to classes.

In that case, I do see there are several threads with people discussing what recorders they use, so it might be good to take a look through those via the search option? My mom just bought a cheap one from Walmart when she was in classes, and it worked well for her, though I think she had to set it out on top of her stuff.

Another option is those smart pens that I've heard good things about, in which case you'd get good audio while taking notes, but they might be more expensive than $100.

They REQUIRE you to bring a laptop? Oh my...Hmm. Just curious what if one of your classmates didn't have a laptop or couldn't afford one?

I will take a look at those topics though! Thank you.

We have in-classroom quizzes on our laptops. So I guess technically they aren't going to do anything if someone doesn't have one, but that person is certainly going to get a lot of 0's on quizzes.

It's always respectful to ask before recording. And use your phone as a recorder. Easier to transfer files to computer or thumb drive. Plus its already on your phone for easy listening.

I would use my phone but like I said in my initial post it runs out of battery quickly. And, yes of course, I will be finding out my college's policies on recording as well as the individual instructors. Thank you for your reply.

A laptop was mandatory for my nursing program; some colleges will rent out things like chromebooks (the community college I work at does this), but the private college I attend does not - you're on your own there haha

I have a Sony ICD-PX333 that I'm currently using for my microbiology class. I love it. The battery last long, it has 4GB of memory and you can also put in a micro sd to store more memory. It is also pretty easy to use. I think it was $60.

$60? Where did you get it for that? I was looking at this one, actually, a week or so ago on Amazon. It has good reviews, but it's $142.95 there. D:

I got mine from best buy, but it looks like its been discontinued. Definitely look into the other Sony voice recorders. I am sure they are similar, probably a updated version of what I have as well.
