Question Lets Work your brain

Nursing Students General Students

I had a test last night with a question that said If you had an Asian woman that was in pain and the nurse keeped asking her if she needed pain medication she refused. What would your take this as.

I can only remember the best two

a. culture and ethnicity

b. Is her way of dealing with pain

What do you think?

I'm guessing here (not a nursing student yet lol)...would it be A...because otherwise wouldn't they have just said a "woman", not an "Asian woman" thus defining a cultural association?

C Needs to talk more with this woman and find out what her 1-10 pain rating is, and where she feels it is tolerable. Also discuss with her the things she needs to be able to do to recover, and can she do those things with the pain where it is?

Also both a and b can be right at the same time, it's a really badly worded question.

Would love to see what "C" and "D" were.

My spouse of 31 years is Chinese and both A and B would be correct. Admission of pain can be a sign of weakness and/or lack of control (of course if it hurts that much who really cares what anyone thinks of you). With time and practice, it certainly becomes his or her "way of dealing with it."

I agree that it's poorly worded. I really noticed this question because I just got back from my pharm lecture where we had a guest speaker on pain management who just happened to comment that Asian pts are not as likely to ask for pain meds (she said that Hispanics and Italians were more likely to as a group) I think A and B could both work, but based on hearing that lecture today I guess I'd say A. Let us know what it was!

The answer to the question was A :chuckle

Definitely A :balloons:
