Looking for Nightingale Pledge ALTERNATIVE

Hi everyone,

I'm (hopefully) graduating this May and we are starting to plan our pinning ceremony. Our class is really interested in finding a more updated variation of the Florence Nightingale pledge. Our Management instructor told us there were several. I have found one online so far. Anyone have any ideas? We are still doing a lamp lighting so we don't want to stray too far, just something that isn't so ancient!

My non-sectarian alma mater didn't use the actual Nightingale Pledge, I imagine because the original had religious wording not appropriate to a state college. It was very close, though; I don't know who changed the wording, so no idea to whom credit really goes. I'll put it here and see if it works for you :)

One of our instructors recited it (piece by piece, like wedding vows) and our class repeated.

"I pledge in the presence of this assembly to practice my profession faithfully. I will do all in my power to maintain and elevate the standard of my profession, and will hold in confidence all personal matters committed to my keeping, and all family affairs coming to my knowledge in the practice of my profession. I will devote myself to the welfare of those commited to my care."

If you compare the Nightingale to this one, they are quite similar, yet the updated version works well today.

patient advocacy is a vital role of nursing, but it is often hidden from the public eye. patient advocacy means standing up on behalf of our vulnerable patients, and this is not an easy role. we must often stick our necks out and step on toes. the patient must always be front and center to everything we do in nursing. we must continuously strive to ensure the highest quality of care, safety, and that the patient's holistic needs are being met. i think patient advocacy is best captured by this immortal quote from virginia henderson (1968), "the nurse is temporarily the consciousness of the unconscious, the love of life for the suicidal, the leg of the amputee, the eyes of the newly blind, a means of locomotion for the infant, knowledge and confidence for the young mother, a 'mouthpiece' for those too weak or withdrawn to speak."

Or you could write your own pledge! That would be memorable.

Hey thanks a lot you guys, these are all great suggestions. We are looking for stuff to present to our class for a vote, not sure how it will go over with faculty, but pinning is a student funded and planned project, so I think we can present a solid case for it. I just need to get through this semester so I can attend the pinning! I'm all ears if anyone else has anything. Thanks again!
