I need your honest opinions.....

Hi everyone

I need your honest opinions. I'm taking my prereques right now and doing really good. I'm confident I will be accepted next semester *keeping those fingers crossed*.

Thing is.....I just found out I'm pregnant. It was not planned but we're extremely excited.

I've decided to go to school next semester anyway because I've been working so hard o get in and I'd really like to graduate on time.

I'm due on December 10, which is right before finals. So most likely I'll have to have the baby and go right back to school to take those exams.

My question to you is do you believe it's possible? Or do you think the first semester in nursing is just too demanding and I won't be able to pull it off?

Honestly, I'd put it off. Your baby will only be this little once. Is this your first child? You are so young at 24, you have all the time in the world to go to nursing school; why not put it off one year to spend time with your baby?

Nursing school is very, very difficult. I am a straight A student, and I went to nursing school with an 18 month old and a 4 year old. It was do-able but very difficult. If my baby would have been even younger, I'm not sure I could have been the parent I wanted to be AND the student I wanted to be.

I started nursing school Jan 07, at the time my son was 1.5 months and my daughter 29 months. It has been difficult so far, but with the help of my husband, mother, father, brother, sister I have been able to do it. If you have a lot of support at home I would say go for it, if you don't I would suggest that you wait until your baby is a least a year old. Good luck to you!!!

I agree with this. Everyone assumes that they will take their pregnancies to term, they will leave the hospital in a couple of days and return to their old self in a week or so. Textbook, right?

There are so many variables that we don't consider, and the baby's timeline overrules everyone else's.

You are so young...if you were in your 30's I could understand, but at 24, you can certainly afford to take the time...and you will NEVER regret it.

The time spent with your young infant is irreplaceable and so precious!!! Why not consider taking some classes towards your BSN like ethics, statistics, etc. and enjoy the time with your baby for several months if not a full year or two...take as many other classes as you can part time and then apply for nursing school. Congratulations on the pregnancy, enjoy the whole experience and by the way, breast feeding is not only healthier for the baby and yourself, it's an amazing experience, the bonding between you and your baby is beautiful. Good luck.

Go for it! I have 2 kids and there is never an easy time. Just do it and get it done!

I'd check with your school about their policy of pregnant nursing students, many college's insurance in the clinical settings won't cover a pregnant student, not to mention the attendance policies make concessions for medical but odds are you might miss more than they allow, the states individually mandate that you have X amount of hours of instruction and clinical to sit boards when it's all said and done, I'm with the ones that say take the time off or take some more general ed classes that you'll need later for you BSN, Congrats tho :)

We had a student who had her baby just prior to finals week of our first semester last fall....she completed the semester successfully, then took a deferment for 2nd semester (spring), so she'll also have the summer off. She's supposed to rejoin next fall for her second semester. To my knowledge, she did well while she was pregnant.

The timing certainly works well if you were able to do something like our student did; you'd have almost 8 months to "be" with your child and then resume your studies after the summer.

Most important thing will be to discuss this with your instructors or the dean of your school.

Best wishes!!

Thanks girls!!

I was thinking abou doing what wdwpixie's classmate did: start my first semester next fall, have the baby in december and then take spring 08 and summer off.

I think I'll wait and talk to my doctor first.

Thanks anyways. :flowersfo

That's what I did. I had my baby in December. I went to school in the fall and took spring and summer off and returned in the fall. However, I wasn't in nursing school. I was taking prereqs. Talk to your Dr and talk to the person in charge of the nursing program to find out what your options are. Good luck and congrats.

I found out I was pregnant only a month before receiving my acceptance letter. So I put off nursing school for two years and did not regret it. Now I'm almost ready to graduate. Nursing school is tough and I felt that my little one needed most of mommy those important first years. But that might not be the best decision for you and your family.
