Nursing Students General Students

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to get a thread started for all of the BHC/MVC students; please help me get a support system going here. I am starting at BHC in Jan. 07 and would love to make contact with the other new students. It would also be great if the current students would join in too, maybe share some advise;) /horror stories.:uhoh21: I'm sure that you current students have a lot to say.

El Centro/Northlake has a couple of really good threads going, but it would sure be great to talk with those I will be going to school with too.

Good Luck to everyone!

Thanks to everyone who responded. I guess I am going to have to work on being flexible. I am just NOT very flexible by nature, and always plan everything down to the last tiny thing way in advance. It doesn't help that everyone starts school on the same day. In the past the kids have started a couple of weeks before me so I could get them settled prior to starting.

In the upper grades they do not get a school supply list so you have no idea what they need until after school starts. It is going to be so hard the first week or so getting them settled in school while trying to deal with my first couple of weeks in nursing school. I went this weekend and bought all the basics I knew they would need. I think I bought enough notebook paper, spirals, pens, pencils, and folders for the whole year lol.

Here's another important question...... When do you order pay for your book package. I was told we basically order everything all at once in a package which runs $800+. I am concerned because my book check which comes the end of the week of success camp is only $600, and I won't get any remainder until two weeks into school.

Also when do we pay liability, the $40 syllabus charge etc? With the background check, drug test, shots, scrubs, steth, shoes, cpr cert, dosage calc book, and the kids school supplies, and clothes I am going to be tapped out. Do I need to take any money to success camp? And if not how much do I need to be prepared to pay, and how soon? Will they wait for the remainder to come in. I am sure I am not the only person who get financial aid, and is poor lol.

I was on financial aid. I did not buy the book pack. I would buy used books and sometimes not the same addition but it always had the same material only on different pages. I did not use a book for pediatrics. ( I was mostly A with a few B student during NS) I would buy books off the internet and even at Half Price Book store the one in McKinney and the one on North West Highway are the best for Nursing Books. You do have to buy the supply pack from the Book store you will need on the first semester and one the second and that is all.

Good luck and it will be over before you know it.

I also bought my stethoscope on e-bay.

What is in the supply pack? Do you remember how much the book pack was, and how soon they asked you to pay for it?

Thanks Josh, we are all real nervous about it. Tommorrow!!!

They did not have the books pack available for us like they have had for the next 2 classes. I know it's alot upfront, but it sounds nice, because with us everything was so disorganized, alot of times the bookstore would never get the books we needed until weeks or months into the class, and we would have to get them elsewhere.

The supply pack for skills lab was like 70 or so I think in 1st semester (not sure, it's been a while) and 100 something for 2nd semester.

Thank you so much.I think we are all a jumble of emotions right now one minute I am fine and the next I am freaked out. I am fine right now and will hopefully stay that way until after the test. It is only a test and I have to keep telling my self that.

Good luck to everyone that is going to take the HESI tomorrow and we will all do great.

the book pack was around $400-$500...it included all books needed...except peds/ob/psych and foundations, for the entire program. I am so glad that I bought the package because you were able to download the books onto your computer and reference them quickly, highlight parts, copy and paste, share notes w/other students, take your laptop instead of the big bulky books to class.

You won't need money at success camp...just know that within the first week you'll pay the fees to the cashier (insurance, meds pub, tuition). It's expensive, but I'm sure you knew that going into it...thank goodness they post a rough idea of costs on line so there isn't a huge sticker shock ;)

Also, definitely get familiar w/the folks at financial aid, since you use it, because so many people had trouble with it (either no check when they expected it or it was late or not the amount the expected, etc)

Good luck with everything!

Well tutition is taken care of. They did post the book package price online and its $736 which includes a drug reference and tax. What is meds pub?? And how much is it?

Is the syllabi $40 included in the book package or is that seperate? How about nursepac $85? I know about the insurance fee..., but what about testing fees $125? Do we pay that all at once?

Congrats to all of those that just graduated :)

I have a couple of questions for y'all...during ob/peds/psych will we have to go to the hospital the day before and pick out patients like in the other semesters? I'm trying to determine which day of clinical will be best for me...also is anyone willing to sell text books from either of these classes? Thanks!

We did not have to go the day before to pick up patients in OB or Psych. Some of the clinical instructors in Peds made the students go the day before to pick up patients ( I believe it was the clinical the went to Medical City Dallas) I went to Childrens Hospital and it was great we got to do emergency room , OR, NICU, PICU, PICC IV team, and a surgical floor. I went to Richardson for Psych instructor very layed back and nice. The other group got to see more intresting cases so if you are very intrested in Psych go to Green oaks ( the one by Medical City). For OB I went to Parkland great experience saw many babys being born also spent a day in NICU. You can do Peds with out the book.

thanks for the info! I really appreciate it :)
