What were you before?

Did you always know you wanted to be a nurse or did you have a job that led you to become one? I was a unit clerk on a med/surg floor for 6 years. I start an accelerated bachelors degree program on the 31st! really excited!

I started college immediately after high school as a biology major with the intent to go to med school. College was a heck of a reality shock, and I realized that I didn't want to spend the next 8 years of my life in school. Additionally, my brother was in a pretty bad car accident and I saw who it was who spent the most time taking care of him- the nurses. So, I made the switch to a nursing major and graduated only a year behind schedule. Haven't looked back since.

I went to university after high school & majored in nursing but then moved & the town didn't have a university that had a BSN program (I also wasn't sure I wanted to be a nurse) so I went to a community college & became an LVN.

I knew I wanted to be in healthcare but when I started college 15 years ago I chose a different path. When the economy was tanking, many people as myself took that time to return to school. I decided to get back to that original path and enrolled in an accelerated BSN program. I've been a nurse for about 3 years now.

I started college at 20, with no real sense of what I wanted to do/be. Then I met my future husband and dropped out. I worked several years for the county government in property taxes, then quit my job when my first child was born. I pieced together several at-home gigs, including working as an editor/proofreader, doing freelance writing for a few magazines, and my interest in natural remedies for my child(ren) developed into me becoming an herbalist with a fairly successful home business making and selling herbal products that I sold online and at local trade shows (the online business still exists - my sister bought it from me in 2007). I continued running the business which became my fulltime generator of income while in nursing school, which I started in my late 20s.

When my oldest was an infant, I became a La Leche League Leader and decided what I wanted to do when I grew up was become a lactation consultant. At the time, with no degree, the easiest/fastest route to becoming an IBCLC was becoming an RN, so I entered nursing school with no real interest in becoming an RN, but to become an IBCLC. While in school and working as a nurse extern, I was surprised to learn that I enjoyed nursing also.
