I thought this would be a good discussion thread, and could help us to get to know one another better.

Specializes in Emergency Room.

i chose ed nursing because of the fast pace, variety of different age groups and diseases and of course the excitement. you never know what will walk through the door and that makes you stay on your toes. you learn so much and team work is a constant. ed docs are very approachable and willing to teach you. they don't treat you like a servant and they value your opinions. i work in high acuity so we are forever getting complex cases. i don't think i will do it forever, but for now it is giving me the experience i need if i ever want to move on to something else.

Specializes in Neurology, Neurosurgerical & Trauma ICU.

I work in a Neuro/Trauma ICU and to be honest, I don't know EXACTLY how I ended up here, but I think someone other than myself had a little hand in it......let me explain...

I have always been facinated by the brain and all the mystery that it holds, I love trauma and I have to have something that's fast paced and complex or I'll be bored out of my mind. But to be quite honest, at first, I don't know what drew me to the unit I'm in now......but I realized it about a month after I worked there.

When I was 19, my father died of brain cancer. While I knew what he died of, it never occured to me that my father was in my unit at one point (my mother didn't let me go to the hospital when he was in...I was 17 with a newborn at home).

It just hit me like a brick wall one day....I was like "OMG, my father was here at one point!" I still currently work with his neurosurgeon, but I've never mentioned it.

Also, it's not like it was the local hospital. I work at a hospital that's actually 45 miles from my home.

So, was it my father giving me a little "push"...I like to think so! I think it's why I enjoy my work so much....because I can relate to what it's like to be in the family's shoes. And maybe it brings me a little closer to my dad in some way. I miss him everyday and wish that I could've known him as an adult.
