What made you want to become an RN?

So as a nursing student in progress, I was doing some thinking about this, and so I decided that I would post it to all of you nurses out there and get your opinions on it, as I would love to hear your thoughts on it. My dad, being a nurse now going on 17 years, has shared his thoughts on the matter, so why not get everybody else's? Or whoever wants to share, LOL. :chuckle

What made you want to get into nursing? Stories, motivations, etc etc!

I got my BA in psychology in 2004, got married to my high school sweetheart and got a job as a staff person in a group home. LOVED it. Loved working with the individuals in the home. Had my son in 06, bought a bigger house, needed more money, got an assistant manager's job... started missing the direct care of the individuals a little bit, but it was okay. Had my daughter in 07, got a Manager's job and ran the group home... REALLY started missing the direct care with the individuals, but needed the money. My wife is due with baby number 3 in Sept. and I've had it with this management crap. I miss being on the front lines, caring for people and FEELING like I'm REALLY helping some one. Nursing will support my family, and give me TRUE job satisfaction. I CANNOT WAIT! I've got 2 more pre-reqs and then I'm in the program. I'm loving every minute, although I must admit, full time salaried job, Wife, 2 kids, 1 on the way and school is crazy... I know 10 years from now I will be living my dream! :D

I really REALLY love psych patients...especially the really violent, hearing-voices, combative forensic patients...I like working with them because it's cool to see them go from that to a somewhat functional person, and because they have so many issues...and I am totally fascinated by the illnesses...and I needed a job that could travel with me as my husband is in the military...so here I am!:D

Earthworm Jim crawled into my ear and promised me $1,000,000 in gold doubloons if I fought my way past the bog of eternal stench in front of the Goblin city with the nursing instructors with the fake roving glass eye and the temperamental clinical instructors whos pass/fail teetered on the severity of their case of hemmorhoids and how well they were responding to the lastest release of h2-agonist medications...

...still hiccoughing and waiting for the gold doubloons though. I might have been tricked...

The main reason I became an RN was because I needed a guaranteed job out of university.

The other reasons were because I get along with most people, I'm interested in science/anatomy stuff and the fact that you can travel around and get a job almost anywhere.

I read The Nun's Story in grade school and thought being a nurse in the Congo would be the coolest thing!I've been a nurse all over the world...it has been a good profession for me!
