i'm often asked during job interview what customer service means to me and i have hard time answering this question because i really dont know the answer. so what is a good answer to this question?

Doing what management wants with no questions asked and remembering that the patient gets what they want when they want, no questions asked.

Kidding.

Good customer service is giving it your all - 110%. Leave personal stuff at home and focus on your job. Go out of your way to make your pt's comfortable and go above and beyond your duty.

Gee, I'm making it sound like we should be slaves but that's not what I mean. Ex: I'm an aide. We received a pt who was critical in our ICU who needed a blood test but we could not perform that test. It was a rare test to rule out something tropical, and we are an 80 bed rural hospital. I volunteered to drive the blood to a larger hospital 40 miles away during a tornado warning (it was a watch when I left). Yes, I got reimbursed for mileage and I got paid for not working but it was still stressful - I was trying to dodge a tornado and golf ball size hail. And I'd do it again. Pt did end up with something unusual and had to be transferred out.

But good customer service doesn't have to always be so dramatic. It could be as simple as sitting down with that lonely old woman and listening to her for 5 min. even though you have 50 things to do and your shift ends in 30 min. Just caring deeply and showing empathy is good service, IMO. I've been in the hospital many times and just having a nurse advocate for me is enough to make me at ease.

my answer and my belief is that i will treat others the way i want my family or myself to be treated. that is my goal each and every time i go to work. am i always successful? no. but i try...

strap a door mat to your back and assume the prone position! Just kidding, basic pay attention to their complaints, answer/fix whatever or direct to someone who can.
