Was just hired as new graduate nurse, what is the Health Assessment part?

I just got hired onto a Med-Surg unit as a new graduate nurse and have to go next week for a Health Assessment for employment. What exactly do they do for this? They told me I will need my vaccine records and that I will get my pic made for my ID and get my car registered. What else do they do for the Health Assessment part?

It really depends on your facility. I had to show proof of my vaccination hx, and they asked me a few questions about my health (history of lung/heart problems, mental health, hypertension etc). That was it.

A urine drug test, mask fitting for TB mask, and making sure you'll be able to handle the amt of lifting and walking you'll be doing.

Specializes in LTC, Memory loss, PDN.

As Ginger 80 said, it depends. I've had complete and thorough physicals as well as a Doc ask me, "are you alright?" and sign all my papers when I said. "yes".

Specializes in Community & Mental Health, Sp Ed nursing.

I once had an Occ health nurse run me through proper lifting, reaching over a bed, lifting weight over my head, dexterity exercises, and duck walking for 20 feet...and this was for a volunteer position. I was told I had to do the same exam as newly hired nurses. Another position was the same and someone mentioned above, Do you have any health problems? No? Ok, you're good to go. So be prepared for anything.

Specializes in CVICU.

As others have said, it depends on your facility. For my job, they placed a PPD (had to have 2 negatives, one of which I was able to use from a recent PPD from nursing school), ran a UDS and drew labs to verify vaccinations (titers), and a quick "physical". Pretty much I was asked if I could do the physical requirements of the job (bending, lifting, stooping, standing, etc).

Thanks yall! I will pretty much be prepared for anything. They told me I just have to meet with the Health Nurse for my "physical" so it must not be too detailed. lol!
