Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hey everyone!

I'm a nurse wannabe, attending school next fall.

I'm curious what you "real, live" nurses think of such programs on tv as ER, Real Life Trauma, Maternity Ward, etc.

Are these show a help or hinderance to the profession?

Are they realistic?

Do you think they show a glamorized version of your work?

I'm very curious as to what you - the experts - think about this topic.

doo wah ditty

We've been talking about how TV is not like real life, but . . .

Last night on ER I just had to burst out laughing when a couple of scenes were too close to real life! When Carrie and Dr. Corday were fighting and Carrie started to cry . . . whew! have I been there! And when Corday came back to the ER and stepped off the elevator and there was nothing but chaos, and that crazy lady in the hall started to scream at her . . . LOL! Been there!

Specializes in NICU, PICU, PCVICU and peds oncology.

If the general public out there knew what it is that we really do all day, maybe we wouldn't have to fight so hard for the respect we deserve (and the remuneration that goes with it!). I find that many TV portrayals of nurses are so off-the-mark as to be ridiculous. But this is what the public sees. :o I watch a lot of medicine related television (no, I DO NOT get enough of it! :D ) including ER, Trauma, Maternity Ward and Strong Medicine. The TLC programs are more accurate than any fictional show could ever hope to be but nurses are still given short shrift. I get annoyed when the nurse is represented as a bimbo or as a glorified gofer. Maybe we should petition TLC to develop a program about REAL nurses, and get the truth out there!!

When I lived in Winnipeg, I offered a number of times to have the Manitoba Minister of Health shadow me for a day, because he too had no clue what a nurse does, or why we deserved a big raise. He, quite naturally, declined my offer... many times. Someday he'll be a sick old man, and I hope every nurse that comes within ten miles of him remembers what his attitude toward us was. But I digress...

Anybody going to watch Presidio Med tonight? Not that it's the best example of medical accuracy...

micro out of here

Another topic that's bothered me for years - no one else seemed to care! My take:

Scrubs - funny, shows docs dealing with dilemnas I've faced, nurses - girlfriend and coffee getter.

ER - at least nurses look like they know something. But - smart nurses - why aren't you an MD? Never go for advanced practice, horrible example of float problem - floats fault, not Carols.

China Beach - strong nurses - really, main character!!!

Mostly, girlfriends, coffee fetchers, ones at whom MDs bark orders.

Why does the ANA never seem to notice these things.

Most realistic - movie, "Meet the Parents" can't remember comedians name, but, "You're a male nurse? Couldn't get into medical school?..." Funny, cause so true. Robert de Niro the future father in law.

Yeah I hate the way nurses are portrayed on these shows. Maybe the producers/writers/creators just don't know what is going on with nursing right now. Maybe we need to inform them. Apparently on next weeks ER Carter has to choose 3 nurses to lay off in order to pay for those new metal detectors. I sure hope the writers are ready to show what happens in that ER with a shortage of nurses. I would like to see these shows address these issues. I'm assuming that the writers just don't know what is going on in the real world of nursing. By the way if emergency rooms in larges cities are always the chaos we see on ER I don't understand why anyone would work there.
