Trauma pt/blood products

Okay - calling all ICU/trauma nurses. My husband's uncle was in a car crash on Friday. He has multiple facial fractures - they trached him for an airway. He also has multiple abd trauma that they took to surgery. Liver lac and small intestine damage. They have given him 36 units of blood products. All the info is coming from a non medical person. so I don't know if the blood products are PRBC's, FFP, or platelets. I know he is at risk for DIC, etc. My mother-in-law is asking me if she should go there immediately or wait until this w/e. We are in GA. He is in Maryland. They were talking about taking him back to the OR yesterday. But today they never said anything about going back. I told her to get an update tomorrow then decide about when to go. What do you think?

I think you should do what your heart feels you should do? So are you going?

She left today. He seems to be doing some better. He didn't have to get any blood products in the last 24 hours. The plastic surgeon has been back to talk about reconstructing his face. And they are trying to wean him off the vent. Need prayers. But everything seems in his favor at this point. Thanks

My prayers for a quick recovery. What hospital is he in in Md. My litttle sis was in a bad car accident in Md in March of 2002. She went to Univ of Md's Shock Trauma Center. The staff were fantastic with her and with us (her family). Either I or my father was at her bedside constantly and the staff were great about it.

She did not have her seatbelt on and was driving and fell asleep. Her jaw was fx in 2 places, Left radial head fx, spleen lac and compression fx L3-L4. Nasally intubated and vented x 6 days due to jaw swelling. She was only in the hospital 9 days then in rehab for 9 days then back home with us in Philadelphia (She lives in Va.). She was back to 99% baseline by September 2002. She has minimal weakness of her left arm.

Praying for a quick recovery. Best of luck.

Hope all goes well and he recovers quickly.

The hospital is in Bethsda MD. I don't remember the name of it. (I have that disease CRS - Can't remember #@%$) Thanks for all the support. Will keep you updated as we hear.

KeniRN - glad your sis did so well. Hope she wears her seatbelt now.

My prayer are with him and your family. That is alot of blood to recieve. Probably due to the liver laceration. Did they repair that in the first surgery. If they are trying to wean him from the vent already they must feel he is improving. Hope all goes well.

Prayers and warm thoughts coming your way. No blood products in the last 24 and weaning off the vent sounds like improvment to me, even if small....but it takes a bunch of small steps to make a big change. :) Please keep us posted.
