Hi all,

I am a PACU/Anaesthetic nurse from Australia and I am currently studying a Masters in Peri-operative Nursing. I am yet to do my OT rotation and need some help with sutures....

This is a practice exam question:

What sutures would you choose?

· 4yo patient having a circumcision

· 40 yo undergoing open reduction & internal fixation of fractured ankle

· Obese lady with an acute bowel obstruction – Laparotomy incision and insertion of a drain

· 21yo female having a skin lesion excised

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks :)

Hello, and Welcome to Allnurses! Most of us are regular nurses and as such we are not allowed to suture, let alone give advice along those lines, but I'm sure some nurse practitioners will come and help you. In the meantime, please be sure to look around the site and see everything Allnurses has to offer. We're glad you're here.

Here you go..an excellent article on sutures from an OR nurse.

If you ask the mods can move this to the OR forum where you will get a more targeted response.

Thank you for the article:

Here are the answers I had....

· 4yo patient having a circumcision - MONOCRYL

· 40 yo undergoing open reduction & internal fixation of fractured ankle – NYLON for skin, VICRYL for muscle

· Obese lady with an acute bowel obstruction – Laparotomy incision and insertion of a drain - VICRYL for GI, SILK for drain

· 21yo female having a skin lesion excised - MONOCRYL for skin
