Stepdown or Outpatient Psych

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello

I am a new graduate nurse and have accepted a job in a surgical stepdown unit. I have worked in a psych outpatient clinic for the last 18 years no weekends, holidays and 8-5. (Not doing nurse) A job was just posted for a nurse and my job has extended the offer for me to apply. I am torn as if I should apply.

The pros for new job: Pros psych job

Learning opportunity 8-5 m-f

Critical Care experience Been there 18yr

Use nursing skills Steady pace

Gain knowledgeable experience

Cons for new job: Cons psych:

night shift No critical care

Fast past. Hard to change to CC

Not a set schedule Routine Care

My goal is to do travel nursing in about 4 years or working in leadership in nursing

Any advice is appreciated

The surgical step-down will make you more marketable and well-rounded. Beyond that, you have only been offered to apply for the other job ...so there's no actual choice to make just yet.

Then you need to have far more bedside nursing experience to be marketable, so I'd pass on the psych job unless you plan on retiring there.

Thanks for the advice!:geek:
