It's been a while ..I worked as an LPN in various facilities back when agency was hot work. Expect for your time management skills and prioritizing to be used a lot. Med passes are..well..go visit the ltc forum ..they are not my favorite places to work BUT the experience helped me get my current job

I worked for a SNF for 5 years as a LPN prior to this job. Days are extremely busy. Heavy med passes and treatments. I would see if you can shadow to see what a typical day is like. Most times we were short staffed. It is a great job to teach you organizational, prioritization and med pass skills.

I have worked as an LPN since Dec 09 and work at a SNF. I get report, pass meds for about 2 hours, chart, do through the treatment book, then start another med pass for another 2 hours and do my treatments along with the meds. My treatments are fairly easy and not time consuming- dressing changes, various lotions/ cream applications and that's about it. It is usually very busy, but I have a desk nurse who handles the admission! I will start block 3 in August and feel this job is really teaching me a lot!

Great advice! I love working in SNF, the elderly have a special place in my heart. The people i care for have seen many changes and have endured a lot in their lifetimes. I learn something new from my residents everyday.

If you are a relational type of person, you get to know all of your residents, and can anticipate their needs and joke and talk with them.

Short staffing is quite commonly an issue though in long term care, and that gets frustrating at times.

Before accepting a position in a SNF, i would make sure that i asked about the ratios on each shift, and if they mandate overtime.
