Hi Amandajeanfarrell,

I knew from my first day of psych clinicals that I wanted to become a psychiatric nurse. I accepted a psych nursing position directly out of college despite all my professors telling me to med-surg experience first. I can honestly say I don't regret going directly into psych. I was a inpatient/ED psych nurse for 5 years and now I'm a psychiatric nurse practitioner. I love my job! If you're passionate about psychiatry or find it really interesting, go for it! I would caution you about for-profit, stand alone psychiatric hospitals though. My first job was an UHS facility. I was 22 years old, had only 3 nights of orientation (yes, 3) and then was the only nurse for

Good luck in your future endeavors!

Specializes in Case manager, float pool, and more.

I work float pool now but many years ago in nursing school I recall saying I never wanted to work in psych. I tolerated my clinical and vowed never to work in that area. Alas, I was in a job that did not support my going back to school hours and I needed a job quick. A friend hooked me up with a psych job and I loved it. I enjoyed and looked forward to going to work. Problem for me was I also missed working in other areas too. Hence my move to the float pool.
