Hi everyone,
I'm still relatively new here... in case you haven't read my other posts, I'm planning a career switch into nursing but have not yet started school. So forgive me if this message has a lot of "layman's terms" and such - I have a lot to learn!
Please send your prayers and/or positive thoughts for my brother. He recently had surgery on his hand to remove some sort of large lump (can't remember what it was called). They had to go in through the back of his hand and go way down into his wrist to be sure they got it all, so my understanding is that it was fairly intense surgery. Unfortunately, he had it performed at a hospital which has a very poor reputation, by a doctor with a worse reputation. I know there are probably plenty of stories and rumors about all hospitals and doctors, but my mother worked there as an RN so a lot of what I have heard came from the horse's mouth.
Anyway, my brother is a trainer for several sports teams at the college he attends. He had to go to Florida with the girls softball team last week. My mother just got a call from a hospital (I think Ocala Regional Medical Center - anybody there???) telling her that he's been admitted, and has major infection going all the way up to his elbow. He's on morphine and something else (can't remember), but is still in a lot of pain.
From what my mother and brother are saying, apparently the incision was not closed properly after the surgery, and on top of that, the sutures were removed too soon. Both my mom & brother are very non-confrontational people, though, so they went along with whatever the doctor said was OK.
I don't know how serious something like this can get, but any input would be apprecited. Again, sorry if it sounds like I don't know what I'm talking about, I have a lot to learn! But please send your positive thoughts and prayers for my brother.
Thanks,
Kathy

Kathy,
Sorry to hear that your brother has been having problems. Post-op infections do unfortunately occur, even with "good" surgeons. Warm thoughts headed your way and to your brother. I hope that he has a speedy and complete recovery.
And don't worry about any jargon problems. I think that we try to speak as normally as possible here. The posters who use a lot of medical terminology and jargon make me wonder, "who are you trying to impress?" If there's ever any question as to what a term means, just ask and it'll get answered.

Sending thoughts and prayers to you and your family. Unfortunately these things happen. I work in a hospital with a not so great reputation and also know of a surgeon with a worse reputation. Every single one of his patient's comes out with some sort of infection. What I have to wonder is why are these surgeon's still practicing with all these problems behind their names??? Good Luck with your situation and good luck with your decisions heading into nursing. It's a tough but very rewarding profession. God Bless!!!!
