Pimples, blackheads and acne

Nurses General Nursing

Published

While cleaning a patient's face, blackheads were mistaken for ground in dirt. (The individual had had a seizure and had fallen pretty heavily onto his forehead, enough so he was bleeding from a cut on his forehead) The nurse was observed picking the blackheads.

The individual actually looked much better after she was done, and the patient appeared grateful for the cleaning but...

My question is shouldn't she have just left them alone? What about pimples? And cystic acne? And boils? Should we be draining boils and other skin infections after they have opened up? I have noticed that this older nurse does this and the areas appear to heal up remarkably quickly. What is best practice?

Holy crap was this fun to read as someone who is just taking her nursing prereqs!! I'm a little traumatized, but laughing hysterically at the same time. Wow... what am I getting myself into...

I am, also, a confessed popper. It drives my husband crazy! However, I control myself at work, except on two notable occations. One was a fairly young lady in my ICU for respiratory failure on the vent. She had an art line in her groin and had a big, raised blackhead on her mons. After a few days of checking that site, and seeing that blackhead every two hours, I had had enough. I went and got a pair of hemostats, grabbed that thing and out it popped! What a relief!

The other was far more disgusting. I was taking care of an elderly gentleman and turned him on his side to look at his back and found the hugest, most vile blackhead on the face of the earth. I measured it and it was 4inches by 2 inches. I kid you not! His wife said it had been there for over 10 years. I could just not leave that there, it was just to awfull. I put on full PPE, including a hair covering and pulled. Most of it came out in one huge chunk but then I had to push from the bottom to get the rest that had almost tunnelled. The stench was amazing. After almost 10 years, that reamains as one of the most disgusting moments of my nursing career.

OMG THAT IS SOO DISGUSTING!! But I would have done the same thing...I have a resident who has the grossest blackheads on her face & since I do 1:1 with her so often I "pop" her every chance I get...her family actually thanks me!

i read something in here about benzoin, what do you do with it in this case?

My first patient in med-surg II was a young (and VERY good looking) man who was in for an I&D on an infected pubic hair. My partner and I went into his room to find him reclining, shirtless, in a very model-like pose, in his bed. He very smarmily asked if we wanted to check his wound. We rapidly left the room and fell out laughing in the clean utility room! Later he offered us chocolates that his girlfriend had brought him! Ew, dude. :nono:

Elizabells, you should have told him that flirting with his nurses is part of discharge criteria. Sounds like he was well enough to go home!

OMG i have never laughed so hard! I am so glad to see I'm not alone. I confess I am also a popper! I'm not an RN yet, but I agree with one of the other post's I read, it willl take alot of restraint not to pop one when I see one. When I see a blackhead on my husband it's mine! I know it may be gross for some but I just can't help it!!! My MIL had one one time and I squeezed it too! I guess I am definitely cut out for this line work!

sorry, have seen one too many cases of facial mrsa from pimple-popping to even *consider* playing with someone's zits, no matter where on the body they are....(besides, the gunk in them wierds me out anyways!)

this thread makes me ill...yet i am drawn to these stories!! my ex is a compulsive picker and he'd ask me to 'squeeze out' anything on his back he couldn't reach...i literally pulled out gloves i heisted from work for cleaning (new ones) and aseptically did it...weekly. it turns my stomach thinking about it! i could never pop anything on a pt! it's so gross! if their face is rly bad i get out the hydrogen peroxide and use it as astringent a cpl times a shift.

kudos to the poppers though, it takes all kinds!

OMG! I never thought I would find anyone who could not resist the urge to pop too.

Wow. This was a pretty cool thread even if popping is by and large not reccomended.
