I was currently offered a position as a PCA on the ICU at Overlook Hospital. Can anyone tell me about the facility because I have never been there. However, I have heard nice things about it from patients. Someone please shed some light on the matter. Thanks in advance.

Specializes in ICU.

Congratulations on the job offer. I spent a great year as a tech in the ICU at Overlook and the time spent there allowed me to hop into an ICU spot right out of school.

First off, the manager is great, she goes out of her way to accommodate special needs. Also, being a nursing student, working in the ICU will give you a huge amount of extra exposure to clinical work, and every nurse in that unit is willing to teach you if you ask. I can't say enough good things about that place, I was very sad when I left after graduation but the urge to move to SoCal was a big one.

Now a little about the hospital/unit...Downstairs are two 9 bed med/surg ICUs that take everything but cardiac. The hospital has its own CCU so thats where those things go. These patients are high acuity and you see everything under the sun down there. Upstairs is the 10 bed neuro ICU. This hospital is a comprehensive stroke center so every serious stroke comes in from about a 60 mile radius. The neuro docs are absolute geniuses, and the nurses are experts in everything neuro. When the 10 beds overflow (which happens alot) neuro patients go downstairs to the main ICU. Because they have the same manager, staff (and if your lucky...you) will float between the two as needed.

Hope this helps and is not too rambling, but as you can tell, I loved that place and still do.

I go there as an outpatient. Employees are always customer-friendly. I'm a very satisfied patient! I can't talk about the particular dept but my overall impression of the whole hospital is great. Good luck and congratulations!

i don't have any experience on the place but I have heard nothing but good comments about it. that is actually one of the places I would love to get into. So good luck and learn as much as you can, it is going to help a great deal on your journey throughout nursing school.:D

I worked there for 4 years in the float pool.(just left last year for an outpatient wound care position) I worked every single floor(and ICU) in the place and loved all of them! Just watch out for those July new residents! :)

What floor are you going to work on? You can pm me if you don't want to post it publically.
