I am thinking of making my life very difficult by getting my BSN. I would like to hear about other peoples experiences:

Where did you go?

How long did it take?

How much did it cost?

How many hour per week did you work at it?

The good:

The bad:

The ugly:

Any other words of wisdom you may have would be greatly appreciated!

i am thinking of making my life very difficult by getting my bsn. i would like to hear about other peoples experiences:

where did you go? california state university, dominguez hills

how long did it take? four years (part-time)

how much did it cost? sorry, graduated in 1998, i don't honestly remember

how many hour per week did you work at it? varied. i was working full-time 12 hour nights and attending an on-site program (also obtained my ba in anthropology at the same time)

the good: could do "homework" at 0300 in my pj's; didn't really work with groups so my grades were my grades

the bad: at that time csudh's program required that you mail your required homework assignments and you had to watch the weekly lecture on cable television. needed a proctor for any exams, sometimes the professor would take weeks to reply to a question you had, you had to set up your own clinical sites and preceptors

the ugly: i do remember that because i was an out-of-state student the fees were higher plus you had to pay a bloody "computer fee" which made no sense at all. also was unable to attend graduation; because i was an out-of-state student even though my grades were good enough to get me into the honor society, i couldn't because of my out-of-state status. bummer.

any other words of wisdom you may have would be greatly appreciated!

having done both on-site and distance education be prepared for more required work on your part. no necessarily the required readings but the required submitted homework, papers etc. plus nowadays i think the trend is for more group participation. if you attend a on line program that is out of your home state, be prepared for "glitches" in attempting to set-up synchronous "chat" times with your fellow students.

good luck. i was thisclose to obtaining my fnp via a distance program but september 11th happened, and i dropped out. yes i am kicking myself now, but at the time it made sense (for me to quit the program) i don't know if i would ever go back to an on-site university program again. i really like on-line programs.
