very controversial place of business... I don't know the exact impact but I wonder if it would cause some sort of unnecessary bias on the part of the nurse recruiters for the hospital down the road...

You don't usually need prior experience to work in a hospital as a new grad, from what I've seen.

Hospitals advertise for "new grad" positions every day. If anything, this may limit your future prospects.

Out here the hospitals are not taking new grads in new jersey... thats the reason i am confused, either i will have to take a job in a nursing home initially or to take this job in the termination of pregnancy clinic.. what do ull think.. i really appreciate all ur comments as ull know the real world i havnt yet stepped into it...Thank you once again:nurse:

if it was me, and this may be just my personal bias influencing here... I would take the position in LTC. Logically speaking, it would give you a chance to ease in to nursing more than a hospital would and would give you experience with a variety of types of patients and illnesses. You could always look for a LTC facility that was under the umbrella of a hospital, and then you could apply as positions at the hospital opened up later on. Generally they prefer to hire from within.

I am a bit confused though because you called it a surgery center and then an abortion clinic. I don't know if you've ever been in one or know much about it, but afaik pregnancy termination is almost never done via surgery. Its more like a vag exam on steroids. If thats the case, your activities couldn't really prepare you for a hospital experience in any way that I can imagine.

There are a lot of.... things... that would be hard (atleast for me) in working at an abortion clinic. I am pro-choice, but I still don't think I could feel good coming home after that every day. But then, I know that was not your question.

I work in the OR @ a hospital. We call these procedures suction d&C's. 99% aren't termination of the pregnancy. I will not go into detail about the procudure, but I will tell you that I would NOT want to do these day in and day out for 8 hours a day, 5 days a week.... NO way!!!!! As another poster stated, I would do the LTC instead. But, that's just my 2 cents.. Take care and good luck...

I would go for the LTC position. You would at least be able to get experience in medication administration, wound care, Foley care, assessment skills, etc. The abortion clinic seems to me that it wouldn't offer much if you were doing the same procedure day in and day out. Not to mention the emotional drain you may experience in such a controversial place of work... :twocents: :nurse:

I agree with the many points brought up by others.

If it is a surgery center that does terminations as well as other womens health services, then it might be ok. BUT if it is only an abortion clinic be prepared for what that entails. As well as the work itself.... Around here you would have to deal with the occasional protest, people camping out with signs at the clinic for a week at a time. Also, while some people feel strongly about providing that kind of service, how will you feel to tell people about your work? It can be a very lonely situation depending on how much support you have.

Another concern would be the affiliation of any future hospital/employer. We have two MAJOR hospitals that are catholic. Experience in terminations would not get ya job there-understand?

Keep in mind that I'm in the mid-south bible belt. Maybe things are different up NE.

You gotta really do some soul searching on this one.

U Guys have been just so wonderful with ur suggestions thankyou very much... i have decided not to go with the job at the clinic as it wouldnt give me any experience and it will be too heavy on my heart... i wouldnt be able to handle it...Thanks again all of ull. :nurse:
