I am working on developing a nurse preceptor program at my hospital for critical care nurses. I am wondering if anyone has any input on this subject or if anyone has gone through preceptor training? I am wondering if preceptor training is usually all online or if its a hospital-based program. Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks

We conduct regular classroom-based training for preceptors in all of our acute care facilities. In addition to the basics (communication, conflict management, documentation, adult learning, etc) we include experiential learning... role play focusing on common situations. The scenarios are contributed by preceptors and reflect actual situations. We emphasize 'coaching' & facilitating critical thinking rather than the traditional 'show and tell' role for preceptors.

Some facilities also have 'invitation only' CE & networking sessions for preceptors on a regular basis - this is VERY popular & serves as an incentive. Heaven knows that their miniscule salary differential isn't really much of a motivation.

Thanks for the help! How long is this classroom- based training program? And how often do you offer this course? I am developing a preceptor program for my small community based hospital and am not sure where to start. Did you ever consider doing an online education program instead?

Also what is this "invitiation only" CE & networking session you refer to? In all my research I have not seen this. Is this outside the hosptial?
