Good day! Im a registered nurse in Nevada. I passed NCLEX last Nov 2016. I got my bachelors here in the Philippines. Basically, I dont have any clinical experience yet. I worked as a PDN reliever because I was busy on my NCLEX preparation. I wasnt able to move yet in Nevada and still here in the Ph bec I dont have any relatives staying in the US. I am a citizen too. I am planning to finally move to Nevada this July but I dont have any idea how to start. Do you have any suggestions about these dilemmas:

1. Which is better: LV or Reno?

2. What are the hospitals who accept newly grad nurses?

3. What do you think is the best thing to do first cuz it's my first time to go in the US alone. Basically I dont have any place to stay in. Is it feasible if I look first for a hotel, then search for an apartment? I really dont have any idea about how to start when Im in the airport already. No one will pick me up or such.

4. Do you think it's more convenient if I look for an agency or recruiter?

5. Can I find nursing jobs which can offer me relocation or private housing packages.

1. I don't know what Reno is like but Las Vegas is relatively good for new nurses, though it can take some time to get into a hospital job.

2. The Valley Health System often hires new nurses, especially now at their new hospital (Henderson Hospital).

3. If you can research places to live before you travel all that way it would be better. The weekly/monthly hotels are not very good or safe around here so getting an apartment would probably be better. Also you can figure out how to get from the airport to where you are staying even if you have to take an UBER (depending on how much stuff you have with you).

4. Research agencies and recruiters but if you can do it yourself that is probably best.

5. I doubt anyone around here will offer relocation from the Philippines and I have not heard of any hospital or anything that includes a place to live.

Thank you so much. Probably I'll start with how I'm going to look for an apartment. I'll try to do some research about that hospital.

Moreover if I may ask again, how is the process of renting an apartment? Do I need to prove that I have credit card on hand or such.

For example, from the airport, ill try to visit the apartments ive reserched beforehand, then pay already on that day so that I can stay in the apartment already? Thank you so much.

Apartments will need you to fill out an application and submit credit/background checks. You may need to stay in a hotel for a short time before move in but I would recommend a regular hotel for a few days. There are some cheap and decent hotel rates on the Las Vegas Strip or just off the strip that are safer than any kind of long term stay motel place. You will then need to put in applications to jobs in the area. You can start to do that perhaps before you fly here but you will probably have to wait until you are in Las Vegas so that you can go to the interview once you get called in for one. Polish your resume and if needed make sure someone checks it carefully since it sounds like English is not your first language. I had to rewrite my resume 10 times to get my current job.

Just personal opinion here- I have spent considerable time in both Las Vegas and Reno and really find Reno to be a much more pleasant area.

Also, unless you are set on city living or have to rely on public transportation you may want to consider some of the smaller towns in Nevada. There are frequently more needs in those areas and you may be able to get relocation assistance. Some of these are within reasonable driving distance of the cities if you want some "big city" time.

thank you bagladyrn for that info. I am still doing my research of which to choose bet the two. Since it's my first time to go to the US, maybe it's more convenient if ill choose reno. LV might be too overwhelming for me. But i am still weighing the risks and possible benefits. Thank you!

You may also want to research Phillipino nurses living in LV or Reno. There are some but I do not know if there is a formal group with whom you could form an association for support. Try to get some contacts either through a church or professional nursing group, too.
