most and least favorite DX to care for?

Published

In general, what is your favorite diagnosis to take care of?

I liked Tricyclic OD's (cause they could really crash sneaky and fast); unstable GI bleeds, acute respiratory failure, acute asthmatics and ectopic pregnancies. You could say I don't mind a mess. Of course, I also like happy endings.

Least favorite:

OD's on stupid meds; hysterical young women and teen girls; almost anybody related to a prominent or rich person or, god forbid, the rich person themself; drunks.

Bipolar drugseekers wear me thin -- always on the bell.

But, try having 3 or four spazzing TURPS in one slot with CBIs going at different rates...

Most FAVORITE DX??? ooooooooooooo i just LOVVVVVEEEEEEEE

a good wound. Not the decub kind, but the sawed off finger, or the S/P MVA with through and through lacerations.

also ( I know i'm gonna get laughed at) I love the ETOH detox patients. OHHH when they get combattive and you have to leather them!!!! WOOOHOOOO you're in for a wild ride and a fight with the docs until they order lethal doses of ativan then they say "SCREW IT" Vec 'em and tube 'em...lol

LEAST favorite??? Dementia patients. God help me, i'm in long term care now. LOL Thank goodness i'm in Staff Development, and not in direct "RESIDENT" care!!! LOL

I think Personalities are a huge percentage of our "like/dislikes"!!!!

PLEASE tell me what ETOH means? I've done real well figuring out most of the lingo.

ETOH is the chemical name for Alcohol, of which I think I'll have another glass of after this horrific day at work -- LOL

MOST FAVORITE DX: Alzheimers--they're either lovers or fighters, and can change day to day. They keep me on my toes physically, and mentally as well. Who couldn't love a geri pt. streaming by in a w/c just looking for someone to give her a hug, or the little man that just knows how to give your butt a little pinch and then smile. I love my Geri's.

Worst Dx: Any dx that leads to death in the convalescent center, and no family comes to visit.

 I love ortho pts. what's wrong with a broken bone?
Specializes in ED staff.

Give me a veinless wonder to stick, especially in a critical situation and I'm happy. Hate psych too.

Specializes in ICU, PICU, Orthopaedics, Spinal.

 Hmmm, let me see here. Favourites would have to be your newly diagnosed DKA kids, heaps to do for them, multitraumas, sepsis, with all the drips and drains and so forth, the more machines the better I say! Basically all your acutely ill ICU patients.

:( Least favourites? Psych patients, especially psychosis/ schizophrenics, they just really freak me out, don't know how to deal with them. Old men with crappy chests who have to cough up phlegm just when I walk in the room. And, after 4 years in ortho I was sick to death of joint replacements, particularly those done on obese women who just want a nice little holiday, not to get up off their asses and get moving!!!

:) OK, first my favs.... ANYTHING with pus in I just love it !!!!!!! Also love GI bleeds , I like drunks, ODs and anyone who can scream loader than me Iam usually impressed with. Fresh MIs , trauma, I guess any kind of train wreck or anyone crashing is usually fun. True resp distress, bad CHF. I even like epistaxis. :o Now, what do I hate?! Anyone who drives a car that costs more than I make in a year is instantly suspect. Psych pts, if I can't see the bugs crawling on the wall it gives me the creeps when they do.

teenagers with PID that b*itch and moan to me about how mean I am to them, then run crying into the arms of the little brat that gave them the clap. People that aren't sick and try to bypass triage because they "know" someone in administration. And last ,but certainly not least, anyone in administration.

Specializes in Oncology/Haemetology/HIV.

I love my AIDs patients, my Onco patients and my Hematology patients.

I loath Borderline Personality Disorders, ETOH abuse w/ liver failure or Pancreatitis. I can also live without putting anyone in skeletal (the bone drill - eewwwwww) traction.

Pediatric end stage CA. Breaks my heart and spirit.

Patients in excrutiating pain. Make me want to cry.

Post surgical patients, especially cardiac, are my favorite.

I also love taking care of kids with downs, angelmans, etc. They are soooo much fun and soooo sweet (usually).
