Masters in Nursing??

Good evening everyone! I wanted to get opinions and I know you will point me in the right direction! :icon_roll I have seriously thought about getting my Masters in Nursing. I am almost done my BSN program. My question is this... I was thinking about doing the nurse practitioner route, but I am told by a few doctors that NP's are not being utilized. The docs. I have spoken to said NP's were a great idea several years ago, but they are finding in general practice, they do not need them and that is the trend I am told. :( They said I need to specialize.

Well, I am interested in either, OR, Cardiac or ICU... so what do you think I should get my masters in?? I know that is an oped-ended and subjective question, but you all are WORKING in the field and know the trends. I do not want to spend several thousand more dollars on a masters degree and then find it to really be of no benefit. Any suggestions??? Any ideas on what may be a good route to go in being that I like Cardiac and OR? I thought about nurse anestetist, but that is too involved for me and as far as Cardiac, we only have one cardiac group in my region and they already have their NP's. HELP! :rolleyes:

I see lots of jobs for NPs when I am browsing the health jobs on Careerbuilder. Maybe search around and see what's really avail. in your area. If I was an NP I'd like to be a clinician for Planned Parenthood.

Hello, Epona,

These docs are only one voice in your area. This is not accurate information in general.

You may or may not be able to secure a position as NP in your area and may require relocation in order to find a position as NP, but I would do more research in your area first. Do not listen to only one opinion.

What interests you? If you are unclear on a specialty path, you may need to work as an RN for a while in order to see where this leads you. I always suggest RN experience prior to pursuing the NP pathway.

So, continue to ask questions, gather research, and try and figure out what interests you. Good luck.

Remember me?? :) I am doing just fine in school (got into Sigma Theta Tau recently) and I am getting ready to graduate in the near future and wanted to know opinions on the NP route. I'm in school for NP and that does not seem to be the case here in KY. A lot of the physicans here utilize NP's and we actually have a shortage; they want more! I know some physicans don't think that NP's get enough schooling, ect and prefer not to use them, but that does not seem to be the opinion here. Plus, you can never go wrong with extra education!

Congrats on everything and good luck to you! I would recommend that you work as an RN for a while (two years at least) before you decide on a specialty. Who knows what you'll like and what doors will open? Explore your career based on your current level of education before going for more, because as an experienced nurse you will know what you want and get so much more from your MSN because it will be what is right for you.
