i can't believe i just typed a longer post about this and then lost it before it posted!! maybe shorter is better, lo l:)

i would appreciate advice. i am a returning rn after an 8 year absence. i completed a hospital based refresher course with clinicals in april.

i am in the running for an or internship. i think i interviewed well, and made a good impression. i researched or info on allnurses so really went into the interview well-informed. (thank you, allnurses :yeah:) however, there are 46 final applicants for 4 positions so who knows what will happen? i should find out sometime this week.

in the meantime, i had a very positive interview with a case management company last week. pay, benefits, advancement opps seem to be good. i liked my interviewers and the nursing management styles they seem to have. this is an area that i am familiar with, and am confident that i will do well at.

they seem very interested in me, and i am scheduled this week to meet with the rest of the team i would be working with if i were offered/accepted this job. they need to fill this position asap cause their other managers are having to make up the missing manager's case load.

i'd really like the internship. i'm interested in or nursing and i can't see any way into the or without some type of internship. but i know the competition for this internship is fierce.

if the second company makes me an offer before i hear about the internship results, what do i say? how can i put them on hold gracefully, knowing they need to fill this position quickly? i have no desire to inconveinence them greatly or make them feel "second-best" or to burn any bridges.

Be honest and up front, letting them know that you want and need the work, however explaining to them you need to keep tabs on this other position, and let them know if you do not gain employment you'll be glad to take the job. Difficult question, indeed.

My opinion is to either accept the case mgmt position, knowing you may need to back out later, or buy yourself a day or two by saying "I'd like to discuss the offer with my husband/family, etc"

I wouldn't tell them you are waiting to hear about another opportunity.

Hello,

I actually was just in the same boat. I was waiting for an answer about the PSHMC OR internship. (Wonder if it was the same job?) I got another offer in another area of nursing and took it. I could not be sure that I received the OR internship, and needed a change from my current job. If I got the internship I was just going to let them know that I received a better offer. That is what people do. I am really glad I accepted b/c I just got the email today that I did not receive the OR internship. I am really sad that was my dream job. I do however have another position. I am glad I did it this way. I had some extreme guilt about taking the position if I was going to possibly take another, but it turned out that I was right. Good Luck! Let us know how it turns out.

I like the "I'd like to discuss the offer with so and so" -- clever way to stall for time, but what happens when they follow up a day or two later when you haven't heard from your other option?

Take the job, go to the meeting, while you wait to hear from the internship.

Well, because it's not certain that you'll gonna get the internship especially with 8 years gap.

It's not guaranteed to have a job offer after your internship either.

If you start working at the company and hear from OR intership,

then tell your employer that's your goal and passion.

They're not gonna curse at you. =)

Thanks everyone. I had mentioned the possibility of the internship while interviewint. I got a phone call today cancelling the meeting scheduled for tomorrow. They went with another applicant because they felt "my heart was too much in acute care".

Maybe it doesn't always serve to be completely open? Still no word on the internship.
