Frustrated New RN looking for first job
New grads in all of the states you mentioned are struggling. Is there a reason you have to stay in east coast for relocation? Like I said, apply all over the nation if you're willing to relocate. East coast and west coast, even central states are not actively hiring new grads. After nationwide search, I got calls from southern states, Arkansas and Kentucky. Right now I'm on telemetry unit in a medical center with multiple specialties in AR. I'm getting wonderful orientation and they value us. I'm not overwhelmed as a new nurse because my coworkers are very helpful. I'm very happy here.

NYC job market for new grads in 2 years?
european, fyi, if you take extra courses during clinical phase, that'll be a disaster. i've seen my classmates attempting that and most of them failed. please don't. maybe during summer. gtshin30303, i think you should attend laguardia most definitely. what makes you to think that engineering degree will guarantee a job? my friend who graduated from carnegie mellon with 5 years of experience in engineering was laid off past spring. what you've earned is a prestigious spot, and i'm sure you worked hard for it. others who didn't make it will kill for the acceptance. where do you think you can get a nursing degree with that amazing tuition? you still have years to go before you become a nurse. study, commit 100% in clinicals, and be positive. i think giving up an opportunity because of what people say is dumb. you don't know how it's gonna be... and you think we might know?? i just moved out of state for a job and i absolutely love it. if relocation is an option, it will bring good things in life such as affordable rent, less traffic, less patient ratio, less chaos, and etc. if not, then you could look into visiting nurse, other alternatives as the beginning step. don't be afraid yet! my gosh you're not even a nurse, well, you're not even a nursing student yet!

Frustrated New RN looking for first job
I give the same advice for everyone looking for a job in NY. Relocate. Start applying everywhere in the nation and go for the interview. If you get the job, move. If you're single, right away, if you have family obligations, then discuss it with your family. I moved in July and living it up with affordable rent and nice people. =)

Can you help me, please?.......
You gotta relocate. That's what I did and I love it. That's the only solution.

New Grad, needs help getting a job at NY presbyterian!!! help
I'm sorry if I was negative but I just wanted give you the blunt truth. Like you said, I didn't know that you purchased a home in NYC. Without the background info I understood it as you just coming here because you want to live here and hope for the job. If your husband works then hopefully you don't have to worry about the financial needs until you get a job. It was just a concern, not to be unhelpful.

New Grad, needs help getting a job at NY presbyterian!!! help
Why are you moving without having a job? What made you to decide to live a block away from NYP? Do you have a roommate? Do you have money to afford the rent in Manhattan without working? You were too prompt to make a huge decision without thorough thinking. I'm a new grad who was raised in NYC and went to NYC nursing school, externed in city hospital in Manhattan, have a friend who's a manager in NYP. I'm relocating to another state soon (interviewed, got an offer, accepted it) because like you, I have ADN and no experience in a city with tons of experienced, unemployed nurses with BSN. P.S. Private institutions in NYC such as NYP do not hire ADN's anymore.

Nurse Anesthetists
I don't mean to be rude, but what do you know about CRNA? I'm afraid that you only know it's about anesthesia and they get paid really well. Is it just me or whenever somebody wants to be a CRNA and they're not even in nursing school yet, they just want to make a lot of money as a nurse since CRNA gets one of the highest salaries as an RN. If you like caring about other people, I think that's great and you can be a great nurse. For you now, research about getting into the nursing program. You have about 150 things to accomplish before you qualify to apply for anesthesia program. And you don't know what will happen during the road or you just may change your mind if you find something else to be your passion of specialty.

Job offers... stuck
Say yes to A. But ask some time 'till you start. If you get a job at B, then be honest and tell A about it. Don't worry about burning bridges because if you got it at B, then just work hard there and develop your career at B or any other great places later in your future.

NYU Accelerated BSN Fall 2010
Natalie, I went to SUNY school with something else and transferred to CUNY for nursing. I graduated in December 2009, got my license in March. I have about 13,000 federal loan from SUNY for room and board but I paid cash for CUNY. ($1500 per semester. =) I personally visited the hospital that I had my externship last summer and figured that not only they're not interested in new grads but they were planning on layoff on doctors and nurses. It took me about a week to realize the severity of the job market and I started applying everywhere in the nation. I flew to Arkansas and Kentucky for interviews. I accepted a telemetry position in Arkansas and I'm moving in a month. You have a fabulous price tag for prestigious Georgetown. Good Luck. Dominica, Go to a state school. NYU accepts too many students, classes done in huge lecture halls (for nursing!). Does not prepare students for NCLEX or clinical skills. My cousin works at NYU Medical Center in ICU (she graduated from CUNY school) and recently a new grad from NYU in her unit resigned herself after her supervisor repeatedly commented on her performance. Her supervisor was also my cousin's supervisor and said how unprepared the new grad was on the clinical setting. If you want to become a CRNA, then you need to think about the grad school as well, how the heck are you gonna afford all that money? Everything on loans? Why? When you have the option of affordable tuition? What matters is that you have the degree and license when you're looking for the job. Going to school in NYC does not mean you're gonna work here. You just don't know how terrible the situation is because you didn't actively go for job hunting yet. It all depends on the government and economy, not your excellence in nursing or diligence. For your first RN job, you gotta go anywhere who accepts you. That mentality of staying in one specific region makes it even more difficult. You can be picky when you have some decent experience. I hope you make a wise decision and avoid tremendous amount of loans. I went to CUNY nursing, and all my faculty were genuinely devoted to students. It had some flaws, but overall I couldn't ask for more. Good Luck to you. =)

NYU Accelerated BSN Fall 2010
natalie627, i'll be straight and blunt. i'm guessing you don't live in nyc currently. you have no idea about the cost of living until you live here for a while. it's not just the ridiculous tuition that nyu charges. (other than tuition, there's this thing called "registration fee" of over $1000 each semester. this is not activity or student fee.) if you're gonna live in a dorm or a nyc apartment, it'll be about $2000 monthly for a studio. it costs you about $25-30 minimum to get by daily. (food, nothing extra) check out nclex passing rate of nyu from the state website. it is way below than national average and majority of nyc nursing schools. you got all those prestigious scholarships for georgetown. isn't that a great school with good reputation and beautiful campus? georgetown university hospital even has graduate nurse residency program! unless you're gonna pay cash for nyu, please make a wise decision and do well in georgetown. in my opinion, many people are too fantasized about nyc. it's a great city, but it's not the wonderland. a lot of it is because of media such as "sex and the city". those characters make up about 1% of total new yorkers! i got off tangent a bit, but anyways, good luck! =)

Advice please: just got a job offer but scared and having 2nd thoughts
Oh my gosh. Are you worried after getting a job to a specialty floor? How do you expect to know your love of field right out of nursing school? Just do it and be happy.

May 2009 OLD grad, called 17 hospitals today...
Just keep applying on-line not limited to New Graduate positions but to any RN positions even if they say experience preferred or required. That's how I got my job a month ago. Subscribe to career website emailing option and you get results everyday in your mail of your interests. p.s. In my opinion, I don't think any hospital is gonna say "Yes! we want new grad nurses!" if you ask them over the phone. Fax your cover letter and resume instead.
