Is this a Hippa violation?

  1. Earlier this week I received an email from a doctor who is trying to sue another "friend" for a sum of money. Why he wants me involved I do not even want to know. However this doctor who is a medical director of a facility within our hospital system , told this "friend" to pay up or else. The "friend" has been terribly ill and on pain med and said some things. This friend was in the hospital at this time for major surgery. This doctor wants me to give the email to the friend's wife who is a nurse that I work with. I feel this doctor is in Hippa violation and I told him so per email.Do any of you see this as a violation also? I really do not want any trouble but really I see this as a form of harrassment to this poor sick person. Thank you, goatlady

Not only is it a violation, it's downright rude, tacky, unkind, and any other negative adjective we can come up with. He's acting like a 5-year-old! Let him fight his own battles and you stay out of it.

Thank you for your fast reply. I agree with you 200%. This person I believe to be a pathological narcissist. I do not know what to do with this email and do not want to get involved in any of this. Goatlady

Definitely. I would probably go one step further and share that email with someone else as a form of CYA - "what do I do with this?" and meanwhile you are showing it so you are covered. Does that make sense?

I would recommend turning this over to the hospital's legal department.

Yes, or to your facility's HIPAA implementation person ...

How did this ever turn out?
