What is the first thing that must be done after a central venous device is inserted a the bedside? Why?

Um? Place a dressing on it and get a cxr? prevent infx and verify placement?

What is the first thing that must be done after a central venous device is inserted a the bedside? Why?

Stat Chest x-ray before use of the device to determine placement and check for pneumothorax (lung collapse) which is a complication of insertion in the neck (external/internal jugular) or chest (subclavian vein)

Specializes in multispecialty ICU, SICU including CV.

Xray, to verify placement and to make sure that the a pneumothorax didn't develop because the MD inadvertently punctured a lung (applies to subclavian and IJ placement, not femoral, obviously.)

Ideally the site gets dressed by the MD while the patient is still sterile and draped.
