Greetings from a newbie from Germany

Hello,

I am new at this forum and I would like to introduce myself: my name is Saskia, I am from Germany and after my Bachelor´s degree in Nursing 2012 I am working as a nurse - at first for one year at a neurological rehabilitation ward and now since two years at neurosurgical ICU in Germany. Next year I am going to finish my Master´s degree in Nursing and I am still planning to begin further education in "Anaesthesia and Intensive Care" (in Germany both is put together). I am really looking forward to find nice nursing colleague from all over the world and I hope we enjoy discussing interesting topics…and okay…I would like to improve my English, too :D

hey welcome to the board, it's a great place to communicate with other nurses, although this site is heavily used by American nurses like myself. I would like to know what things you would do differently in Germany, but I am assuming that you have not been a nurse in US, so the comparison would be difficult?

Thank you :) Yeah I just have worked in Germany….and I think - compared to the USA, we are very old-fashioned here…

If you want to become a nurse in Germany, you don´t need to have to study nursing - you have to do an apprenticeship…if you have studied nursing, everyone asks you "And what are you going to do with your studies?" "why studying nursing?" "what are you doing differently compared to me?"…and it is very hard to explain…and if I do explain e.g. ANP…everybody asks "What is this!?"…and now, now I enjoy that you all know that you can study nursing…and that there are ANP and other specialists…sooo relaxing! ;)

Welcome! I lived in Germany as a Madchen. :) I was an American military kid. I've been an RN since 2003 and love it. I work in an SICU; most of my patients are trauma and/or neuro, with some general and CV surgical patients in the mix.

So in Germany, you have the option to do an apprenticeship but could do formal studies? Do nurses go to school to practice in the advanced roles?
