gift for new grad

want to get a gift for a really good friend of mine. She is graduating from nursing school and she is also Muslim. I wanted to get her something special and religious to give her courage and strength in her new profession. Any ideas?

I don't really understand why the fact that she's Muslim has anything to do with anything. Would you get a Jewish nursing graduate a Jewish based present?

Just get something that would be good for a new nursing graduate. Gift certificates for massages are always appreciated.

If you want to get her something professionally based, you could get a gift cert to a uniform store or something like that. There are tons of nurse figurines etc. stuff out there available as well. I got some "stuff" like that after I graduated.

Um, because she wants to get her a present related to her religion? Sure, I'd get a new Jewish nurse something related to Judaism. Why not?

You could get her a special prayer in calligraphy to hang on the wall, a simple pendant with special meaning, or maybe a pin for her name badge. (Many nurses at my hospital wear personal pins on the badge, but this isn't allowed everywhere.) Courage, strength, and faith are all themes that have dual meanings for nurses and Muslims.

Get her a nice good quality stethescope and make the card related to her achievement and her faith.

I like this idea, too. I got a Littman master cardiology stethescope with MyName, RN engraved on it for my graduation. I've used it every day of my career. Then a card or something related to her faith will make it heartfelt and she could always save it.

I'm a practical gal and like to give (and receive) practical gifts. A good stethoscope is a wonderful practical gift for a new grad but from your post it doesn't sound like the type of gift you are looking for. I understand wanting to give a sentimental gift that will provide strength to your friend on those frightening first shifts, calm her on those days/nights when everything is going wrong and inspire her when she doubts her decision to travel down this path at all.

I agree with the suggestion of a pendant or a pin but depending on where she works, neither may be an option. The only jewelry that seems to be universally permitted is a watch. While you may not find one that fits with either nursing or her faith, you could do an engraving on the back of the watch to express whatever you like. Alternatively, something like a keychain that she could carry in her pocket may work as well.

I also love the idea of a print or poem but it's not likely she'll have a place at work to display it so if you want something she can have at work that's something to keep in mind.

thank you for all the ideas...yes, it does matter to me to make it personal and religious because it is important to her. I am going with the engraving thing. She can wear simple jewelry. She already has a stethoscope. Thanks for the ideas...finals has me on brainfreeze and I can barely remember to brush my teeth!!!! Thanks all!!!:redpinkhe
