Clinical Ladder Transfer Criteria

Hello! We are revamping and revising the RN Clinical Ladder Program at our facility. One of the hot topics is transfer criteria. Currently, if you obtain an RN II, III, or IV status and transfer out of the unit in which you obtained the ladder then you lose your clinical ladder status and the paycut. From this you can see that our current program requires unit specific goals and expertise rather than just professional growth as a nurse. What does your facility have in place for nurses who have clinical ladder status and want to transfer out of their current speciality? Furthermore, does your facility's clinical ladder program have unit specific requirements that hold a nurse's ladder status only to that unit or does the ladder status follow the nurse wherever they choose to work?

The ladder status follows the nurse wherever she goes. There are very few unit specific requirements for earning points towards the clinical ladder at our facility. It's more general, such as being involved with creating a new P&P, having certification applicable to your specialty, having an advanced degree, doing health-related community service activities, precepting, etc.

Would you be able to share your facility's program?

I imagine there is deep dissatisfaction with the current system at your hospital.

To strip away earned designation and accompanying increased pay is short-sighted and punitive, IMO. Really -- doesn't someone think that a nurse who has completed an applicable project/process improvement in one unit retains the problem-solving, project management and other skills, even after a transfer to another unit? Do those abilities, and the engagement to desire to implement positive change just *poof* vanish into thin air?

You appear new, so the PM function probably doesn't work for you yet. If you can give me an email address, I will email it to you. I would just post mine here, but all of my email addresses give my full name. :)

No. The PM doesn't work for me yet. Email is [email protected]. Thanks!
