Nurses General Nursing

Hi everyone!

On a recent night out, my husband informed me that I "grind my teeth in my sleep." I was apalled! I thought, Not I! he's just making that up because I have had to wake him up to make him stop snoring." In the past, he has told me that I laugh in my sleep, but that is nowhere near as annoying as grinding one's teeth.

Well, a night or two after he said this, I was grinding my teeth so much I actually woke myself up! This has happened EVERY night since. I am now at the point where my jaws are sore during the day, and I have to make a conscious effort to unclench my jaws while I'm awake.

I am wondering if the cause of this is psychological. You know, since he planted the suggestion in my mind, now I cannot stop?

Perhaps the cause is stress? I just started the nursing program, but I don't feel overwhelmed or anything.

Whatever the cause, I really need to know if anyone has had this experience, and if so, does it go away or is there some kind of treatment? I have heard that dentists can fit you with a night guard of some sort, but I wonder how expensive that is? As a student, my funds are limited.

Any advice or recommendations are welcome!

Thanks!

Caroline

I dont take any SSRIs, or any medication for that matter. I have clenched since I was a kid, except in bouts. I guess I have always clenched at night but I only get sore when I clench so forcefully.

I was just throwing that out in the ring, not thinking it as a primary cause. I only mentioned it because it is not widely known, and that it can be "reversible" by stopping the offending medication.

I don't know about anyone else, but I tend to find Norflex, in general, to be a pretty weak muscle relaxant. It tends not to make you as drowsy as the others though. Flexeril tends to be stronger, but can knock you on your rear......of course, if you are already in bed..!!! Those are just my own *personal* experiences though!

Yes sphinx! My Doc told me that norflex was not as sedating as Flexeril. Norflex didnt do anything for me last night, but I will try again tonight...Hmmm, do you think the Flexeril might help? Doc didnt seem like he was willing to prescribe it though.

Also, does anyone just clench, and not grind?? Does the mouth guard help with this? I HATE the idea of wearing a mouth guard, but if it stops the sore jaw and neck muscles, I guess I'll try it.

Anybody just clench, and not grind?
