Books to give to favorite patients in NICU

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hello! This question is especially for NICU and Peds nurses!

I was wondering if anyone knows of any good baby books to give to a special/favorite patient that is a good representation of how special a baby can be to his or her nurse!

I know that in the end, it is really the parents that will value the gift, but as the kids grow up, they can read that book and know that they made an impact on the nurses as much as the nurses made an impact on them!

I have looked around, I was hoping to find something really specific geared toward the nurse-patient relationship, but so far I have found nothing!

Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

Thanks in Advance!

Why are you giving away books out of your own pocket?

There might be conflict of interest here esp if you're favoring some pts. In facilities I know of, the employer will not be supporting this favoritism and you risk disciplinary action.

So that's prob why you haven't found anything to give away - it steps over that professional line of maintaining professional boundaries.

At my hospital, showing so much favoritism to one patient (over other patients) and buying special presents for them will get you disciplinary action.

That is definitely against professional practice standards. The ANA used to have a brochure discussing their standards -- what's appropriate and what is not. They probably still do. You should look into it.

Seriously? No. So inappropriate from a professional.

Once I brought in nail polish for a patient who said she felt inhuman with her nails so chipped. A few times I've bought coffee for patients when going on a coffee run. That's about as gift-givey as I get.

Just don't.

I'm not in NICU, but policy on my unit is that any gifts brought by staff have to be for the WHOLE unit, not just one patient/family. Bringing books for the unit library (it literally fits on one shelf, LOL) is fine; bringing books for one particular kid is not. I'd encourage you to check your facility policy before doing anything. I totally get being attached to certain families and kids, but you have to keep the professional boundaries in place - which can be hard!
