Applied for transfer, told no one, coworker asked me about it

In a spur of the moment thing, I applied for an open position on another unit online, then decided not to take it.

A week or so later, a co-worker asked me about it, at the desk in front of multiple staff. I had told no one about this. She said she heard about it from someone on the other unit "I forgot who", she said. I didn't want anyone to know, especially since I decided not to pursue it.

I was put on the spot, and told her no, I am not sure what you are talking about--- I didn't feel it was hers or anyone elses business, unless I decided to share this.

I did tell another trusted co-worker about this incident, and he said I should have been truthful, and I agree, I felt funny about that, but really did not want to get into it, or explain anything.

The only people that would have known about my application would have been HR, and the new unit's management.

Someone likes to gossip, apparently. I hate stuff like that.

I had the same exact thing happen. I told the person who asked me about it that I told no one and she was just like, "There's no secrets around here, everyone knows."

Thanks for the replies. Wondering why a coworker would ask me about this, especially 'not in private'....made for awkwardness.

Some people are just nosey and rude. Things that shouldn't be open for discussion; especially since you didn't confide in her. I just would have asked her why she wants to know and why she thinks she's privy to such information.

There are no secrets. In the future I would simply state that you do not get into your personal business with co-workers. Period.

Sorry this happened to you, B. Gotta say this occurs very often.

Still worse is when the matter involves a firing or other discipline. Seems just about everybody hears of it... and spreads it around even more.
