Hello all,

I started on my current floor as a new grad and have worked there for 2 yrs. I have really enjoyed it and I still learn alot each day. I have worked hard to gain advanced competencies and specialized knowledge on my floor. I have recently started to charge, and although I have filled in for a preceptor here and there I am about to start my first true precepting assignment, with the same person working with me for six weeks.

My preceptee is an experienced nurse who is new to our floor. I am hoping that we will both learn from each other and this will be a great experience for us both. That said, I recognize there are some unique considerations for this arrangement and I would love to have any advice or tips you guys might have.

Thanks!

You might want to start with what you have told us, recognising her expereince will go great lengths to help you build your relationship but bear in mind that she is new to your area so you do have lots to give as well.

I would guess from the fact that the exp. nurse is getting 6 weeks orientation that this is a new area of nursing for her. I would not focus on the basic nursing skills but on the the things that are different then her past exp. You might start out by sitting down with her and discussing what she feels are her strengths and weaknesses and what she feels like she needs to gain from the orientation process.

First you have to think of what type of experience does she have?Is it the same type on your floor? If it is the same type of nursing then it should be just a mechanics of your floor, certain DR info, etc. The way the floor and work flow goes. You may or may not have to go into much detail as far as the clinical aspects goes, as long as she is able to do it.
