my husband was just diagnosed with a brain tumor and will have a crani on the 21st.. after the incision heals he will begin chemo and radiation.. we have two children ages 5 and 3, who witnessed him having a grand mal seizure.. it was terrifying for them.. i just need some support and sometimes it is not good to be a nurse because i realize the long road ahead of us and our children..

my husband was just diagnosed with a brain tumor and is having surgery on the 21st.. a crani.. our children ages 5 and 3 saw him having a grand mal seizure.. when i came home after working 7p-7a shift i found him sleeping post ictle.. and i was frightened and took him to the er, where they did a ct and found the tumor.. that got the ball rolling and he had an Mri and the rest is just a blur.. i sometimes wish i was not a nurse because i know how rough the road is going to be with the surgery, chemo and radiation.. my kids are ok, but my 5 year old started wetting the bed again... it is hard to even grocery shop.. i could use some words of wisdom if anyone has a similar story ..... thanks jayme

i sympathise with you. i have nursed a man similar age but was unable to have surgery due to tumour location. he therefore decided not to opt for tx and naturaly enough died a few months later - that was his choice and he died at home peacefully with close family present. You therefore are in a better position with able to have surgery then adjuvant tx - better chance of recovery although it may seem like hell enduring these therapies. Find out as much as you can re the type of tumour and it parculiar characteristics - that may help. be strong, chin up and good luck

thank you so very much.. it is strange how as nurses we see sick people all the time and we get focused on the tasks that we need to do to be the nurse.. check iv's give medications but until it really hits home it is like a slap in the face and i am going to be a much better nurse because i will see the patient, their family and all that is part of who they are when i am their nurse...

I hope and pray for him, you, your children.

I have no words of wisdom for your role in this process, however I can offer insight into your husband's.

Get a second opinion from a reputable cancer center.

Allow him to be sick. The biggest burden in the world as a cancer patient is the feeling that you have to put on a brave face and do everything you once did. It only leads to feelings of failure and depression.

What is his prognosis? Where is the tumor located? What sort of neurological deficits can you expect after surgery, if any?

After years of treatment, I have ocular melanoma that I am choosing not to get treatment for. I am far more interested in quality of life than quantity of life.

I will be thinking of you and your family. Good luck.
