Hello:chair:
I'm going to a community college to get my ADN. In my school 60 students are ranked for the overall GPA of A&P1,AP2,Microbiology and the NLN with a minimum of a C average in all Nursing and pre req. And my goal is to do well like every student going into this career choice. I have a terrible Nursing counselor who told me all the classes was hard and who was making fun of a student before my meeting with her staff because of him having a GED. Once, I heard her remarks she made me feel uncomfortable and made me think to myself this is why I want to be a Nurse. Nevertheless, I was wondering if it is wise to take a class offered at my school called Intro to A&P. Also did anyone take this course before going into A&P1? Many student at my school are taking this class called Medical Terminology even though its not a requirement just like the Intro to A&P. The class Medical Terminology most people take before taking their A&P. Its a class which teaches you the suffixes, prefixes and root words of medical terms. Did anyone take this class and is it a waste of time? Also, I was wanting to know if anyone has taken Principal's of Nutrition I'm looking forward to taking that Spring06. If so what is it like I have to take it every monday 5pm-8:30pm. I was wondering what is going to be covered in that class for it to be so long. And when should I be looking forward to taking my NLN? Thanks all for your help and advice!

Wow, not professional is she? Would make anyone feel uncomfortable. I am so sorry about that. I would have let her known that I heard what she was saying and that it was uncalled for. Immediately would have gone and requested a new advisor/counselor. If they asked why? Gladly would have told them how I felt. That is just me of course.
About the NLN, I posted a few links in your other post. https://allnurses.com/forums/f29/nln-133583.html
Best wishes to you

that's terrible about the GED....I have a GED because I didn't grow up in this country and didn't have the opportunity to attend High School because I wasn't here and didn't start college until my 30's.... I am very successful in college, give me her e-mail, I'll take care of her Medical terminology is recommended in our school although it is not mandatory. It might not be a bad idea to take it prior to A&P. Since A&P is a very demanding class you will have a greater workload than in other classes, it requires a lot of memorization. I would suggest you knock out your Chemistry classes prior to taking A&P, makes things a little easier in my opinion. Good luck and is there a different school that you might be able to attend?
Future RN Jess,
Thanks for the information about the NLN. I also didn't say anything about the whole ordeal that I had over heard her chatters. I didn't say anything due to the fact sometimes you just have to let god deal with people. I believe god can hurt her for her negative judgement more than I could. I just thought it was so non-professional for her to do that though. I just had to look over her stupidity. Their are many people who have GED's and go far in life. Also, Future RN Jess I just wanted to tell you how nice of a person you are. You are truely a wonderful person. I have seen you respond to many people on these Forums in such a positive and beautiful way. I believe truely you may have a destiny in being a Educator in the Nursing world! Keep up the good work Jess!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am so sorry that you over heard your adviser say such things about another student. I agree with future RN, very unprofessional. I highly recommend taking Medical terminology before A&P. Learning the parts of words and what those parts mean really is beneficial in A&P. I took it years ago but was very surprised at how much I recalled when in A&P. As for Nutrition I am taking it now. This week is my last week woohoo. The class wasnt hard, just a lot of work. We covered everything from digestion of each macronutrient and micronutrient, how each one affects our bodies with deficiencies and excessiveness. Fat soluble vitamins and water soluble vitamins. We kept track of our daily food intake for three days then compared our total nutrients per day and on average against the Food guide pyramid. Kcals, energy expenditure and so much more. This class was a lot of fun just time consuming, which would explain why your class is so long. I am sure you will love it though, very interesting.
I agree with stpauligirl, although Chemistry wasnt a requirement for my program, I would suggest taking it before anything else. I wish I would have taken it anyway.
If your school offers pathophysiology I would take it whether it is required or not. I loved this class and feel that it will be very beneficial to me when I start nursing classes in January. It really put everything into perspective from A&P 1 and 2.
Good luck to you, you sound like you are on the right track and will make a wonderful nurse.

I don't think the pre-A&P class would be a waste. A&P is very demanding!!!!!
Medical terminology was a TREMENDOUS asset to my education, and I strongly encourage you to take it. The nutrition class is 3 1/2 hr long because you will meet only once per week. There will be a lot of reading and you will probably have some case studies to do.
Good Luck you can do it...I did it twice (LPN and LPN to Rn) and worked full time and have a family. Trust me- it IS do-able.
Stpauligirl-
That is such a wonderful thing that you accomplished moving from another Country to the U.S and did outstanding in your studies. I know how it is from moving from the Northern states of the U.S to the Southern states. I know coming for another place can just be a task by itself. That is turely a great deed you acomplished. I took a chemistry class in highschool I loved it. I didn't do so well in the end of the year due to the fact I was so over worked with the whole year. I did enjoy it very much though! I'll look into taking Medical Terminology this summer with something easy like Music Appreciation. Also, your story makes me believe in myself even more. Thanks!
Thanks everyone I'm going to take the Medical Teminology course. And I'll probably take it this summer. I'm more than likely going to take a light course with that and going to get my CNA certs. this summer as well. So thanks to you all and I'll be hearing from you all more often =)

Thank you so very much for your warm and kind words. LOL about you comparing my moving from overseas to you moving from the Northern part of the country to the Southern part.....it is like living in a different country in the South, that's for sure. My husband is from the Great white North and I have experienced the differences. It took him a while to adjust to Texas which is now our home state! Every State has different laws, customs and what seems like different 'languages' and I have enjoyed traveling and visiting most of the US and meeting people from all over. I never forget my first encounter with a person from North Carolina.....I couldn't understand a thing!!!!! All I understood was Oxford English when I first arrived in the US. People always think that I am from Boston because of my accent :)
I wish you the best of luck, sounds like you have a good plan and you will do well since you already had Chemistry.

Your nursing counselor is a jerk. She has no business talking about other students in front of you like that. Shame on her. Look, whether a class is easy or hard is a totally subjective thing. What I might find easy may be hard for you. What you find easy might be hard for me. And, there's no way to know because there are many factors that go into taking a course. An instructor can make a course hard, or they can make it easy based on what they ask the students to do to get a grade. You could take an Intro to A&P. You will study the same basic stuff. The advantage will be that when you take the A&P that counts toward your pre-reqs you will have been exposed to some of the material already. We learn through repetition.
The medical terminology classes are usually very cut and dry classes (I know, I taught one and I was always trying to find ways to make class fun so the students weren't falling asleep). It is also a basic class because they can't dump the more advanced medical terms on you because the students haven't had A&P or nursing yet. It is also, basically, memorization, so get ready to make flashcards.
Your actual time in the classroom per week is how they figure the credit hours for the courses you take. So, if the nutrition class is a 3 credit hour class, they have to keep you in class for 3 hours a week. It could be worse. They could break it up into two class meetings of an hour and a half each week. Yuck! I'd rather just take my medicine in one lump.
