Gender discrimination

I recently was turned down for a job in a pediatric CVICU. I rocked the interview, and was even considering working nights because CVICU is my dream job. So naturally, I was crushed when they told me they wanted people with more experience. A coworker of mine was also turned down for the same reason. We are both very good nurses.

Then we find out that a male nurse from our floor was hired! He has less than 1/3 of my experience and only half of the other girl that was turned down. He's without a doubt the worst nurse on our floor. He's dumb, lazy, and arrogant. No one on the floor likes getting handoff from him, because it's always full of holes and we have to go clean up after him - make sure labs were drawn, IV fluids are correct...

Experience has nothing to do with it. Just tell me that I'm not a man. Nursing just feels like one big joke.

Is it possible that being a male has nothing to do with it? I am sure your current manager is well aware of you and your coworkers' issues with him. It is easier for her to pawn him off on another unit than to go through the hassle of firing him.

Cosign! The above is the most probable reason and if that is not the reason then maybe he had better networking skills. Honestly, even though I am 100% feminist I would think his gender would be the last thing that would have been the reason.

Could it be that this was a case of "positive discrimination"? This isn't likely to be very popular but could it be that the CVICU was looking to have a more balanced male-to-female nurse ratio? It wouldn't be the first time that an organisation sort of fiddles with the numbers in order to get a better outlook. It happens more often than you would think.

I can't speak on whether or not this male nurse is as terrible as you and your friend are making it sound to be. What I would say however is that, from the outside looking in, this looks like a bad case of "men-hate". For all I know, you could be right. But this is not how it is coming across.

Hot Damn such strong gender statements. Dumb, lazy and arrogant! Experience aside, maybe he pulled off the interview well and as others have stated, your manager wanted to get rid of him as well. And based on his interview, who knows maybe they liked his personality at the moment and saw that he may be fit. We turned down several great nurses interviewing our unit due to the fact that we have more then enough strong personalities that would lead to head butting.

i applied for a job at office depot, once. it was a front desk/cashier position. they never interviewed me. a couple a year or 2, later, i see the police chatting with an employee at the same office depot. he violated probation, apparently. they arrested him. it is what it is. when people are on the Job Search, they tend to be " dumb, lazy, and arrogant" at their current position.
