GCU Summer Program

YAY!!!! I got my acceptance email from GCU today!!! I am so excited to start classes in May! I'm so glad that I will be at St. Joes hospital. Who else got in? :yeah:

@BSkinner,

How were you able to take the communications class at PVCC? I was told if the class was not complete by the application deadline it had to be taken at GCU (which = $2000) out of pocket. Was anyone else told this? I am a 2nd degree student who has never previously taken classes at GCU and was also accepted at St. Joes. Any help on this is greatly appreciated! :)

Hi Lauren! It was my understanding that if you were not able to get into one of the PVCC classes that you would then have to go through GCU. The classes at PVCC are hard to come by. I was on the phone the morning of Spring registration (for like an hour) and was one of the last of 20 students to get into the online course for COM270. I know there are several of the other students in our cohort that took the class at PVCC as well. I haven't taken any classes at GCU either. They are a rather expensive route when you can go to community college in my opinion.

Congrats on getting in by the way!! Can't wait to meet everyone at orientation!! ;)

I am applying in May, and I tried to get into the PVCC class for the spring-no. Then I tried getting in for the summer-no. Both classes filled in literally an hour, and I guess they had people placed on a waitlist, so that is why it filled so quickly (so says my counselor). So I opted to take it at GCU for 8 weeks it started in March, so I didn't have to mess with it in the summer. And ya, +$2000 for this one class....ugh, I can't think about it...It's unbelievable. How are you guys planning on paying for nursing school? Like through grants, or loans, or scholarships? I'm having a hard time finding any good scholarships! And this is my positive thinking side, thinking I will get in for the fall.... :)

Hi inspired RN10!! Yeah I literally got on the phone the second that they were open and just waited & waited to get reg. for that class. I really enjoyed the class and feel I learned a lot. I got a scholarship from GCU for my grades as long as keep a certain gpa throughout school. Otherwise I don't qualify for any grants so it'll be loans for me....uggghhh!!! Don't worry you'll get in, keep that positive attitude!!

They mentioned something about a gpa scholarship. Does it cover the entire tuition or just a portion? I'll be applying with like a 3.5 or so, I don't know if that would qualify me...Such a pain!! My friend got into a scholarship program that pays you for your clinical hours. It averages out to about 2.50 an hour, but I guess anything is better than nothing!! I take the TEAS in april, im so nervous!

The scholarships cover $3500 with a 3.75 gpa, $2500 with a 3.5 gpa, and $1500 for I think a 3.25 gpa. Mine is 3.6something. I will have to maintain a 3.25 to receive this every semester. Don't be nervous on the TEAS. I freaked myself out and stressed for months. I did fine and I have been out of school for 12 years. Math and reading are the only scores they look at. You'll do fine!!

:) thanks for the reassurance! But yes please please post your schedule once you go to orientation,I'd love to have an idea of what to expect. I've heard class 3 days a week, one full day, two half days. Then a 8 to 12 hour clinical. Im going to be driving from Gilbert every day, so the schedule is huge!!

Hi inspiredRN10 and bkskinner661!

Thank you for this thread. I'm actually just finishing up the last of my prereqs for GCU and hoping to finish them by Sept 15th 2011 along with the TEAS V test (which is scheduled to be taken May 9th). Just wondering?! When did you apply for GCU to get into the Summer Program. Was it Sept 15th of 2010? I should be finished with the rest of my prereqs by the end of Summer II this year.

Also bkskinner661 you mentioned a gpa scholarship! How did you apply for that?! Was that after you got accepted? Coz as of right now I have a 4.0gpa. Anything would help be right now financially.

I'd also like to know how you both felt about the negative reviews about GCU. I think at this point GCU is my best choice still if I get accepted. I've been on that date/stamp list for MCCCNP and I think the wait is waaaaay to long. I definitely am not getting any younger.

Thanks for the info! :)

Hi Aspiringnurse55! I applied for the summer start in Jan 2011. If you apply in Sept, you will be up for the start in Jan 2012. As far as the scholarship, when you are accepted the advisor will tell you if you will be getting one, they send a form with the acceptance letter that you have to sign and send back. Yeah it def helps. I'm not looking forward to the loans for sure.

I haven't really seen/heard any negative reviews about GCU except for financial aid which I am just getting ready to deal with. I might have a different opinion for you after that. After hearing how long people were waiting to get into MCCNP I put all my eggs in the GCU basket. I am happy with my decision. And since I'm not getting any younger either (just turned 33), I figured it was my best choice!!! Best of luck to you and I will keep you posted on how things go!!!

hi aspiringnurse,

i believe if you apply in sept that is to start in the spring, and if you apply in january that is to start in the summer, and if you apply in may that is to start in the fall. i think you are offered the scholarship once you are actually accepted in the program. i need to find some more resources as well to pay for things. i need some good scholarship money!!

as far as the rumors of gcu go, i think it all depends. my friend has been working at various (large) hospitals throughout the valley and she said that gcu students have great reputations, and that asu actually has a skewed reputation. same thing in tucson. my cousin is in the u of a nursing program, and she has only heard great things of gcu. i think people state negatives aspects about the school 1) because it a private christian school, that costs some money... and 2) because nursing school is hard. and i am sure over 95% of the program is what you put it into it. if you search these threads you can see bad perceptions of asu, gcu, gateway community college, chandler gilbert community college etc. there will always be those who are happy with their program, and those who aren’t...i am just looking at what is best for me and how i can become a good nurse in the quickest way possible...i too am on the forever long waitlist, and i was quoted to get accepted to begin (hopefully) in the fall of 2012. i just want some certainty, so that is why i chose gcu!

HI I noticed you were concerned about taking COM 270 requirement. I was told the class had to be taken not before the application deadline but before the actual nursing program started. I am taking the class at MCC where it is offered as a day or a night class. I think there were a few colleges that were offering it other than PVCC. So, look to the other colleges before you hand over $2000 to GCU.

Hey inspired, the Mesa campus was just changed to a day schedule. I read that you were interested in a day schedule and you are in the east valley. Since you are on the waitlist for Maricopa did you inquire about the NAU concurrent program? It's $11,000+ and you still get a BSN. I'm looking into the concurrent program as well as GCU. But anyway the AT Still night program was just changed to day so that changes things for me but good news for you!!!
