Gay male nurse stereotype?

So, a question has arisen in my mind since I have been in CNA class waiting for nursing school to start.

There are only 2 guys in my class of 25, and the other guy is married and I'm gay. After doing clinicals in the hospital, I have yet to see another gay male CNA or nurse.

Where does this stereotype come from? I am not seeing it at all.

Honestly, I think most people underestimate the proportion of gay people in our culture in general, and that is because for many of us being gay does not necessarily permeate every aspect of our lives. At work we don't discuss it, so you don't ever realize you are working with someone that is gay. I think the number of gays in health care, more specifically nursing, is probably on par with the percentage of gay people in society. Me and my boyfriend are both in a nursing program of 85 students, 8 of whom are men, and 3 of whom are gay (and 4 lesbians that I am aware of). I know that example is skewed as the percentage of gay men is almost half, but my experience in clinicals is that most male nurses are married and straight. Another point, no one knows me and my boyfriend are gay, nor has it been asked of us... and we all know that nurses love to be in everyone's personal business. Intersting topic though...

I am in nursing school now and in a class of 24. There are 4 guys and I am the only gay one. HOWEVER!! I do know a very large number of gays in healthcare. Mostly nurses.
