Hi everyone!
I am so excited, yesterday I got to give my first shot! It was Lovenox, which is given subQ. I was so nervous, and gung-ho, that I almost forgot to swab with alchohol first! :imbar But my instructor reminded me. :)
I just wanted to share my joy, my husband and kids weren't quite as thrilled with my news as I was!

You didn't massage the site after the injection, did you?:)
The first injection I gave was morphine to a lady who had had a mastectomy. I swear I felt every inch of that needle, and I am sure it hurt me WAY more than it did her! When I had finished, she turned to look at me, and THANKED me! I wasn't any good for the rest of the day! LOL! I was floating, because I'd finally given an injection! Good thing it was in the afternoon, right before post-conference!

It's the little things that really get us in the beginging. LOL At least we got to give our "first" on one of our classmates. Now that was FUN!!!

Cathy, OMG, you mean I wasn't supposed to massage the site!!!!
LOL, just kidding! I didn't expel the air bubble, didn't aspirate, and didn't massage! I researched the drug in Davis drug guide. I was just so happy to finally get to give a shot, any shot! I'm nearing the end of my second semester, and we've mostly just done IVPBs. The pts on our unit don't get many injections besides lovenox and insulin, but alot of IV push and piggy backs. I told my instructor that I didn't want to finish my second semester with out giving at least one shot. :)
Sandra, I wish we could have practiced on each other for the first time, our school doesn't allow it. It was probably a less nerve racking experience to do it on a friend rather than on a pt!
Well, I don't know if I'd say less nerve racking, but at least we knew we where all in the same boat.

My first shot i gave was at a nursing home last semester. All 40 of us nursing students went to a nursing home and gave flu & pneumo shots. I got to give it twice..cuz the patient i picked to give it to, my instructors asked if iwanted to try a 'challenging"pt..who wouldn't hold still. i did it just fine but my second pt was alot easier. hehe.
