Gave my first IM : )

I loved it! The man didn't bleed a drop, and didn't c/o pain! He was a little uncertain at first, though, b/c my instructor was with me, and she was pointing to the exact spot to stick it, and reminding me to aspirate. I'm kind of twisted (aren't we all!), but I enjoyed it. It's everything you dream of, the whole "bend over" thing.

:rotfl: I'm like you in that respect. Nothing like giving shots! :rotfl:

Giving shots was the one thing I looked forward to doing as a nursing student. It hasn't changed 18 years later. :rotfl: Are we sick or what. :p

I did my first human (and 5th!) sq on a pt this week. Her diabetes was out of control and she was also on heparin. I've been practing sq's on my parents diabetic dog for about 2 mos!

Isn't it exciting to get that skill down pat?? I am an old pro at giving IM's....on myself that is. someone else now that is a different story. I am fine with sub q's but the IM's still bug me. I think it is because we don't do them that often. for sub q's we practiced on each other but IM's we used the practice pad. I have let a couple of my friends give me my depo injections so they had practice. I have been gettinf shots for so long (B12 and my depo) that I don't even flinch. they didn't let us take needles home but a couple of the girls got them from a pharmacy and practiced on raw chicken breasts. good luck girls.

I got really lucky, I got to do a flu clinic first semester. I gave about 65 IM's. I am very thankful for the opportunity. After the first, they're a breeze.

My flu clinic got canceled because JAHCO came the day we had it, so they did not want us on the floor. I have given all the IM shots in almost every place. I havent given one in the deltoid, but I think thats the easiest one. :D

Our instructors gave us a lab on injection sites for IM and SQ, and then we had to come back and give each other injections! We had to draw up the saline that we were being injected with so that if we contaminated the needle, we got the one we contaminated. They said it was so when we gave a shot at the hospital and the patient asked if it was our first shot we could actually say no.:wink2:
