Gateway community college controversy

I graduated in may of last year which is when all this happened. What happened is that students think they have the right answer and try to prove it but it's all in the way a question is asked. If you want to pass gateway practice nclex. Borrow as many nclex books as you can & do the cd questions...believe me gateway is all about having the best students who are most likely to pass the nclex on the 1st attempt. Gateway prides itself on those statistics. So do the assigned reading but #1 suggestion is practice nclex.

Amen that! I just graduated the LPN program at Gateway. The more you do NCLEX questions, the better you will do in general. I pretty much just did NCLEX questions to study for HESI and the final. That is it and I did VERY well. I did thousands of NCLEX questions over and over. It really does help! For those of you just accepted and wating for fall to start get an NCLEX book now and start studying. :)

I am almost done with Block 2 and totally agree about NCLEX practice questions and doing the reading assignments...if you prepare for lecture you will quickly decipher the answers for nearly every question. I use Saunders and Prentice Hall NCLEX books and both seem like good prep books for current exams and HESI thus far.

I'm starting at gateway in the fall and thanks to these posts, I will be going to barnes & noble this weekend and buying as many NCLEX books as I can afford! Any recommendations?

The HESI NCLEX book was great for content review, Saunders and Lipincott for NCLEX questions were great too. Also once you get your text book answer the NCLEX questions at the end of the chapter, on the website and on the CDs. The tests are a whole new world and the more you get used to the style of questions the better prepared you will be to achieve success at Gateway and in Nursing School in general without having to play catch up.

im currently in block 3 at gateway and agree with your friend. some things arent black and white, so depending on how you view the situation vs what the instructor was thinking, it can be a battle. and for the most part, the student is the loser. things may even vary from instructor to instructor. gateway may pride itself on stats and passing students, but that doesnt mean the instructors have the same view. of course only speaking about a few instructors. block 1 was great....then it went downhill.........

I start the gateway part-time evening program in July and I am so nervous. My Mom was diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer and she is now living with me. I hope I made the right decision to move forward with school. Does anyone know about the evening part time program? Is it as hard as traditional? Im hoping I will be able to keep up with everything and still spend quality time with my Mother and my family. Help.

wouldnt want to discourage anyone from going to nursing school....however, dont let the 'part time' name full you. it is NOT part time. you have an extra 2 or 3 weeks added onto the regular semester. block 1 is managable, 2 and 3 you're putting in time. dont know about block 4 yet! just know its a lot of work and is a big commitment!

Thank you so much for your reply, I signed the papers and faxed them off, so I guess only time will tell if I make it or not! I was so excited when I got accepted FINALLY that I didnt really think about anything else accept that I was finally in. I will pray that I can handle all of the load with a sick Mother.

i was the same way ...super excited to FINALLY get in! just a warning on the cost of books - they are $1200.00!!!! it was a shock for me when i was told i HAD to buy their books. ive seen some books listed on craigslist for way cheaper though.

oh, and if you get asley and peter for block 1 - LOVED them. they were great - helpful, motivating, fun. it was a great start to nursing school. let me know if you have any questions - i'd be happy to help!

one more thing to eveyone with questions on the 'part time' option - clinicals are on FRIDAY or saturdays. there IS a possiblity that even if you REQUEST a saturday you'd have to do a friday. i know it was a big problem for people in our class.

Well you must be a really strong person to do it with twins!! That is alot on your plate =) Thank you so much for your help, is there anything I should study in the next few months to prepare?? What happens in the first semester? Sorry for all the questions, just trying to prepare myself. I will also look into the books, thanks for the heads up.
