Gateway Banner Fellows March 08

Published

Is anyone starting the Banner Fellows Program in March 08 at Gateway? I'm so excited about starting and hoping to communicate with some classmates.

Also - anyone out there currently in the program at Gateway? How do you like it? Any tips for us newbees?

If you have been accepted for March 2008, I think you only have two choices: Gateway or Mesa. I don't think that the program is offered at any other locations for March 2008.

I also applied for the Banner program but didn't get in. I wanted it so bad, I got extremely nervous during the interview and bomed it. I'm reapplying for the cohort in July and I would REALLY appreciate some advice about the interview from those of you that got in. I've been trying to recall the 8 questions that they asked so that I am better prepared for next time. Do you Remember what they asked?

Thanks cherlee522,

Where did you get this info from (classes, times, dates)? I'd like to find out if it will be the same for Mesa CC.

Congratulations!!!

becklynne2,

I am really sorry to hear that you didn't get in. I know the emotion toll that the application and interview process took on you. I had a nervous breakdown during the waiting period. And I too, was EXTREMELY nervous during the interview:

My heart was pounding out of my chest

I was stumbling over my words

I went off on a tangent, drifting off topic

But somehow, I managed to "pull it together" and summarize my thoughts. I believe I was accepted because of my credentials, and also because they saw that I was genuine and sincere during the interview.

After having goofed during one of the earlier questions, I stopped, took a deep breath, looked all of them in the eye and said "I'm sorry. I am so nervous right now. I'm nervous because this is a huge opportunity and would mean so much to me to be accepted."

They said "no problem, don't worry about it." I continued to answer their questions and move through the interview.

To answer your question. They asked me about 4-5 different versions of the same question:

  1. Tell us about yourself.
  2. Describe a time where you've demonstrated excellence.
  3. Describe a time where you've demonstrated quality in service.

I can't remember the exact wording of the questions, but they were along these lines. Here's my advice for next time:

Before the interview -

  • Volunteeer at one of their locations (if you can) and deliberately discuss during the interview how your volunteer experience has fulfilled your call to service. This will show that you have "gone out of your way" to be a part of Banner and that you are serious about working in healthcare. Search VolunteerMatch.org for opportunities.
  • Re-write your essay questions, focusing on your determination, drive, academic ability

During the interview

  • Dress professionally - a nice suit will show that you take this opportunity seriously and your sharp appearance should boost your inner confidence.
  • Discuss your volunteerism at one of the Banner locations (if you were able to volunteer)
  • Absolutely convince them that you are academically, physically and emotionally prepared to handle the challenges of NS and that you are confident that you will be successful in the program.
  • You may need to interject examples of your past academic success and how you've overcome obstacles in the past to reach your end goals.
  • At the end, reiterate your drive and commitment to being successful in the program.

I hope this helps!

Project confidence, determination and academic ability! You will succeed. ;)

I cant say that im exact.. but I went to Gateway community college website looked up class schedule for NUR classes and these were the classes starting March 17th and that is when we are starting so Im hoping this is for the Banner program. Im not sure I guess til we get our information from Gateway. I went to registration and they dont show us entered in yet soo .

Hey .. the questions I remember them asking were like Interview questions and the best approach I find to answering these types of questions is called the star format..

Situation

Task

Action

Result

When they ask you a question like Tell me about a time in your life when you went above and beyond your job description and why did you do it

Think of a certain situation

Think of the task involved in doing that

what the action was

and the results of those actions

That is called STAR..

So every question they asked me I thought about a "story" I could tell

It helped me alot to think of the questions and prepare some stories and answers for any kind of question If you need some sample questions just email me and let me know I can send you some. I have lots to practice on and you can prepare yourself better for the next interview

This is everything anyone would need to know about the interview.

I am in the March 2008 cohort too!!! Did everyone receive their packet of info? Has anyone asked for our syllabus? I have to admit, I haven't asked because I'm not sure if I should! Has everyone picked up their books? There is a lot!! Woooohhhooooo!!!! Can't wait to meet everyone who is in the March '08 cohort at Gateway!!

:w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t::w00t:

March 17th is orientation? I thought we'd be starting on March 17th. If orientation is that late I wonder when classes start...

How are you planning on supporting yourself financially? I have a full-time 8-5pm job right now, that I would have to quit if our classes are held during the day.

Do you have any idea when classes are held (nights/weekends)?

i'm graduating in March from the Mesa cohort. Classes are during the day and you can expect to have weekends off. Many of my classmates work double weekends to support themselves financially. I took out student loans, but beware that because the classes are offset (not the traditional semester) and you need to stay on top of financial aid. Also, use the nursing advisor, he is excellent with answering questions. If you do your best to befriend him, he can be a true resource. The classes are very difficult with an expectation that you spend many hours outside of class studying. However, Banner is very supportive of your education and you will find that you have an excellent experience with them. I wish everyone best of luck, whether at MCC or GCC!
