Galen January 2013 LPN to RN role call...??

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Published

I just got accepted to Galen Tampa, FL for their evening/online LPN to RN bridge and I'm trying to see if anyone else is going to be starting then that is on this forum. It would be nice to get to know others who will be in the program with me. I'm excited!

Raneedayz I don't remember a Natasha but I know the students who are not in the online program went to Windmoor through the week so maybe she was in that group. I loved windmoor!

Thanks for the info on SPC's rn- bsn program. I was really hoping it was easier to get into. I don't even want to think of going back to school again at this point, lol. I definitely need a break.

I graduated from Galen for my LPN. I also started the bridge hybrid program back in March and I can tell you that I simply couldn't keep up with the material. It is so detailed and in depth with everything, that I felt like I needed more one on one time in order to understand. Anatomy and physiology was such a challenge for me. It requires full dedication. I failed the first time and finally passed the second time. The only thing that I didn't like was how they dropped me immediately to reenroll into the program. I love Galen but it was starting to scare me and I didn't want to risk failing again. I decided to go into a part time LPN to RN bridge program in Brandon, FL. Only 3 times a week 5:30pm to 9:50pm. It currently works for me.

You have to find what works for you and I'm glad you did. I'm always getting asked by people about nursing programs so it's good to know there is one in Brandon that is evenings. Scheduling is so hard during school, especially if you're working full time.

Are you talking about the old Center for Allied Health? I went there in 2010 as the first LPN-RN bridge. I failed that anatomy class. The schedule used to be different.. I find the hybrid program easier, and I love being able to do everything on my own time. I also hate going to class, which was a problem when i was at Jersey college/Center for allied health.

I have another question. I was planning on relocating back to Tampa to finish up at the Galen there, my fiance goes to school in Daytona. I know it is a 2.5 hour drive, do you think it is doable to commute since I only will be required to be on campus about once a week and the 7 clinicals? Or do you think I should be closer? I have family and friends in Tampa so I was planning on coming and staying there the night before Clinicals. How is quarter 5 going? It was kind of hard to get back into things after the break!

It may be doable if you're able to travel and fit your work schedule around it. In Q5 we have 9 clinicals and if you do them Saturday they are in Bradenton which is about a half hour south of St Petersburg. If you do them during the week you may be able to go somewhere in the Tampa Bay Area. I'm on campus 5-7pm Wednesdays.

How is your quarter going? My friend was upset because they said they didn't have enough clinical sites this quarter, so she can only take Lit, and will be pushed back from graduating for a quarter!

My quarter is going great. They would be in the same quarter as me then but we have spots open in my clinical because a few people did not pass the last quarter so that doesn't sound right. I have never heard of that happening. I would be upset too!

Do you know what your preceptorship will be like in Quarter 6 yet? Do they provide hospitals and nurses or do you have to find your own? Does it have to be at a certain hospital? Do you know how much time you will have to be on campus that quarter? Thank you, you have been so helpful!

They always provide the hospital for you. You do not have to do any of that on your own with Galen. I actually want to precept with a nurse instead of going to the hospital with clinical in Quarter 6 so I am right now checking on that. I want to precept at the facility where I hope to get a job. That way I can network during my preceptorship. I was told by one of my instructors in Q4 that I can do this option but I have not looked into it myself yet. I do not know how much time I will spend on campus in Q6. I know one week they were there 4 nights in a row preparing for the HESI exam and doing practice questions. Other weeks they may be on campus one night a week doing projects. I think there is a lab so it is probably one set night a week.

Warning: my first bad experience with Galen but it's a huge one for me! I go to schedule my LAST quarter this week and there are NO weekend clinical spots offered for the online students. This is what we were promised since the program is geared towards working students. I am livid and so far no one is helping me. There is not even an option at all to "choose" anything - instead we all get automatically scheduled for Fridays at Manatee which is all the way in Bradenton, FL.

This is not an option for me since I am the only nurse at my job on Fridays! Even if I did another week day that means I cut my pay by a whole day at work which is not easy to do.

If you're considering Galen for the online bridge program do not listen to the guarantee that you will only have to attend campus or clinicals on weekends or after 5pm Monday-Friday.
