Galen College of Nursing

Published

I wasn't finding any recent information on Galen, so I started a new topic.

I met with an adviser and toured Galen College in Tampa a few days ago and am really interested in the school. I would be transferring as many credits as possible to make the cost more affordable for the LPN-ADN bridge. I live in Orlando where many schools have a 2 year wait list, and my GPA is not that competitive (my 18-year-old self clearly didn't want to attend school), so I have been stressing over finding a good program.

Anyway, I am really concerned about their accreditation. Can anyone help clear things up for me? My head is just spinning. They are regionally accredited by the Southern Association Colleges and Schools Commission. They are currently candidates for ACEN accreditation from 6/13 to 6/15.

My concerns are if my credits will transfer for an ADN-BSN program (NOT paying 18k for theirs). Regarding the ACEN, does this mean they will be accredited in 6/15 if all pans out? I have spent the morning calling local hospital HR depts to see if not having the accreditation would impair my chances of being hired.

Any other information regarding the college would be appreciated.

Thank you!

Hi there

I am due to start the ADN program at Galen in January. Can anyone shed some light on how often you are in classes and exactly how FULL TIME is it? I have most of my pre reqs completed already, for example the first quarter I only will have the college experience class (which I was told is one night a week for an hour) and the computer class. But starting the second quarter I have no credits transferring in. Im not going to lie I am a little nervous about work-school-life/kids balance (as I am sure every nursing student it!). I have a 6 year old and 2 year old and I work nights (7pm-7am) 2-3 nights a week at Morton Plant. I plan on dropping down my work schedule but Im not sure how many and what days I should put my little one in daycare. I asked my advisor but she said it varies Monday-Friday from 8-6. If anyone that is currently at Galen or went there has any experience they could share that would be great! Thanks in advance! :-)

Hello! i am a recent grad of the ADN program so maybe i can help you out.

Having most of your pre reqs done is the way to go here, saves you money and time such as your anatomy and micro. if you only need the nursing classes and you hop on getting your schedule right out of the gait (classes go fast) then your looking at likely 3-4 days a week. two lecture days, a lab, and a clinical. the lab you can possibly schedule on a lecture day as well which decreases your days. i worked 24 hours a week 7p-7a until med surg 2 which is the second to last quarter, which i dropped to 12 hours a week, and i do not have children. several girls were able to maintain full time but they did not have kids and several switched to day shift. many of the moms dropped to working PRN or not at all.

the schedule does tend to vary depending on how many students are regestered for that specific quarter.

if you have any other questions ask away!

i can second this as a 2015 grad, several of my class mates got job offers and early access into StarRN programs. Most of the hospitals in the area know of the school and love getting thier hands on the students!

Hi Saucey thanks so much for your reply! I have many of the pre reqs done but not all of them. I will have to take anatomy 2, micro and the math class. I am taking anatomy 1 this semester at SPC I will be done in December. I'm wondering if the classes at the two schools are different? Also you mentioned it would be 3-4 days a week for just the nursing classes, is that 3-4 days a week ALL day? Like 8 hours? I am super nervous. Dropping down at work is not really a problem I am just worried about my child care situation!

I would take your micro elsewhere as well, I didn't take it at Galen but my classmates that did said it was pretty difficult to juggle the workload that specific instructor gives on top of the nursing course they partner it with

schedule wise varies but I can give an example

clinical will be 12 hours one day

lab will be 2-4 hours one day

lecture will be 2-5 hours two days

if you work signing up right you can make it as follows

clinical one day

lecture and lab together as a 4-8 hour day

lecture on one day

I can't really take micro at SPC because I have to have anatomy 2 first so that would mean I can't start until probably next October to make sure I have them both done

If you do decide to take it at galen, I would suggest what some of my fellow classmates did and take ONLY that class. If you speak to the office and ask to have it early or on its own they will let you. They tend to place it with med surg prt 1 which is the first meat and potatoes of nursing type class, it's very difficult and requires a lot of study time.

As far as child care, many of the moms I were with found that going to class 4 days a week worked better and they picked all the early classes so they were only away from home and kids for a few hours a day versus a whole day 2-3 times a week

Thanks for your reply! That is really cool how you can pick your class times, that works really well with making my work schedule too! I will see if maybe I can take the micro the first quarter since I only have 1 other class (college experience class they just added) unless Galen is like SPC and require you to have anatomy 1 and 2 done before micro

How's your A+P I grade? If it's an A there may be a way around by it by taking A+P II and micro at the same time with your A+P instructors approval and approval by the department head. I took micro at SPC Online and it wasn't hard. I've heard horror stories about the micro class at Galen from fellow classmates that are typically A students.

It would never hurt to ask! Even if taking it with your first nursing course foundations can happen it would be better, it's just rough with med surg

Thought I'd add that we were told they are changing the clinicals from 12 hours to 6 hour shifts so they will be double what we were expecting. :(
