GA BON no longer accepting Excelsior education; Speak up Cont. Updates!!

Nursing Students Excelsior

Published

Hey All,

I aM floored. I just received notice from GA Board of Nursing that they denied the endorsement of my MN RN license because I did not meet clinical practice requirements . When I called the board, they transferred me to a their Legal Nurse Consultant who stated that effective July 1, 2008 GA would no longer endorse RN license from Excelsior College students with no previous RN experience. She suggested that I go to my licensed state and work for a while then try again, but she could not give me a time frame.:banghead:

Has anyone else experienced this. I thought we should at least have gotten some sort of notice/warning before this type of rule be adopted by the board. I am going to file a motion for reconsideration using an Attorney. Before I entered Excelsiors program I called GA Board to verify acceptance. I had been accepted to a traditional LPN to RN bridge program; I could have been almost finished their too. I am so sad right now. I have been crying for two days. I think I will need to see my doctor for Zoloft.

I have been an LPN for over 13 years doing Med/Surg for at least 10. I work on a hospital unit right now. THIS IS SO UNFAIR!!!:banghead::banghead: :banghead:

that is what i would have thought. i just dont' know about this board. i am just tired of fighting and having to explain my all the time. this just doesn't make sense at all.

I was calling about why my I havent recieved a letter from the board yet. And she told me this. I thonk I am going to send this letter to the Sec. of State as well as board members to let them know if you go by law please go by the law that apllies in this case not the law you would like to apply!

I am starting to rethink my reasons for getting my RN. It is something I always wanted to do. But, I did not realize how polictical and cut throat it is. I have worked in medicine for 20 plus years and for the first time I guess I see just how brutal we are in this profession. I think compassion and understanding are just words we throw around now to make us as indivduals feel better about how we treat each other.

I have NC 7 let and the CPNE and I am ready to just say to hell with it and walk away from it. It is not worth all the worry and stress we have put ourselves under to complete this program and then have to deal with the GABON and the politics of this state.

Just my rant for the day, sorry.

Dave, I am so sorry you feel that way. :( You are so close ... I'd hate for you to give up now, but I'd understand if you're tired of it all!

The whole situation makes me sick. I hate the politics, I truly do.

Dont be discouraged! The Lord is my light of whom shall I fear ? That is useful in any situation. Just pray about and concentrate on finishing the last test and Cpne. If you are in the metro Atlanta area I can give you the information of an excellent tutor who help me prepare and pass the Cpne.

In light of the recent compromise by the GA Senate and House, that will now require Excelsior students who are Paramedics to obtain 700 hours of clinicals, will Excelsior College come up with a plan or did they recognize this contingency and have a plan in place for us to accomplish this? If I completed just (1) 12 hour clinical session per week, it would take over a year to obtain the required 700 hours. Does anyone know if North Carolina has a similar requirement? That is where I intend to obtain initial licensure after I pass my CPNE and take NCLEX.

From what I understand you are on your own to set up a preceptorship.

Thanks for the encouragment. I got to find some peace of mind to complete this.

North Carolina has no issues with EC grads at this time.

Thanks, that's great to hear. :D

Are there any hospitals in NC that will not hire EC grads? That was a contention in a letter to the editor of the Atlanta Journal & Constitution by an EC opponent.

So Excelsior is going to take our money and then leave us hanging out in the breeze?:banghead:

Excelsior is not the only distance education program that would require you to set up our own preceptorship/clinicals. It is my understanding that ISU requires the same. I know that one school is not the other but just thought I would interject this info.

If the new law has not gone into effect then shouldn't paramedics and RT's fall under the grandfather clause waiver that was published due to the Governors actions?

I thought the same thing. That's why I don't understand. When the grandfather clause came about I thought current Paramedics and RT in the program would not have to go through all this. This is not fair. I'm going to call the board and EC as well. We need speak to someone about that grandfather clause. Are we under that or basically the GA bon can do what they want like they are already are doing. Like I said ..I knew that is what they are trying pull and would require more clinicals even though we are suppose to be under the grandfather clause. I still have to finish my program as well as other RT's and paramedic and know we have figure out this whole mess.

I was under the impression that if we graduated by next june, then we could get endorsed in by December of next year. But, if this new bill gets signed into law by the Governor it appears that we will fall under it and have to complete the preceptorship. It appears that the boards intention under the clause they posted in December was to allow them to reject paramedics, military corpsman and RT's by their authority all along. By using the case by case basis with the waiver they can choose only LPN's to license by endorsement.
